Sheffield Council has started the hunt for a contractor to build a key link road for its Bus Rapid Transit North scheme between the city and Rotherham

The Tinsley Link road project will see an 800m long stretch of road built under the Tinsley Motorway Viaduct.


It will also cross the tram tracks and bridge the existing rail freight line, as well as going over the River Don in two locations, and includes the design and construction of a substantial piled reinforced earth embankment and also traffic management.... (read more)

Will this new bypass cross Supertrams Meadowhall branch on the flat or on a bridge? It looks like it will cross the Rotherham freight line on a bridge.

I presume it would have to cross on the flat, as the river Don runs alongside the Supertram tracks (between Meadowhall South and Meadowhall) but the lower level of the Tinsley Viaduct would stop any bridge over the tram tracks.

The new route under the M1 is the real reason for this daft BRT proposal which is being championed as a public transport improvement whereas the reality appears to be an excuse to build a new road.

On the plus side, it'll be open to all traffic, and provide a route avoiding the congested and tricky roundabouts at J34 of the M1, so that's a reasonably good excuse to build it.

I just wish that they'd be honest and say that they wanted a new road, rather than using this "trojan horse" approach of a bus service (that has been downgraded and downgraded, so won't extend to Parkgate, won't have Guideway sections, won't have many of the other infrastructure improvements previously promised etc etc), that's all.

I know what you mean, but the links above don't hide the fact that it's for all traffic, so it's not sneaking it through. And if it takes a public transport element in a scheme in order to get a link road built, then surely everyone's a winner?
Having said that, I've not been following this from the start, so I don't know if the link road was originally proposed as bus-only.
I can't see there being too many objections to the link road, passing as it does roughly past the old power station site and the back of the sewage works!

Separately, if the BRT is fast end to end (Rotherham/Sheffield), what impact might it have on ridership of the proposed tram-trains over the same corridor?

such a waste of money given that construction of tram train is about to start, along what is pretty much the same route. plus there is a very good train service already for users wanting rotherham, meadowhall and sheffield.
