Is there any timetabling for frieght trains?
Or do they just run as needed?
I ask because I've seen roughly the same EWS train atleast twice at the same time through Huddersfield but not always.

Yes it is.

Regards the Huddersfield train - the path will be timetabled and allocated to EWS, but the train doesn't necessarily have to run. Timetables also differ by day - for instance SX (saturdays excepted) or SO (sundays only).

Some may also be "Q" workings, ie only run as required.

Some schedules may run under VSTP or STP so will not be in the main freight timetable.

But the short answer is yes, all services running on the network must have schedule and valid consist.
