Forgive me if this isn't the right thread, but the York/Leeds closures etc are, I think, TRU related.

I understand the need to reverse from Leeds to get to York, but my 11.25 to Newcastle arrived in Leeds at about 11.10, to allow for change of ends etc and presumably to manage the western exit better, but we arrived at York at 12.05 and don't leave until 12.22. That's one hell of a lot of waiting around.

Guard has just apologised for this delay (but excused it by saying it was planned, the reasoning not going down well with a couple of people).

Presumably this is just to create maximum timing gaps in the event of any conflicts on the incoming service, but I suppose what I'm asking is why so long?

This could be in the diagram thread, I guess, but us amateurs do get a little confused sometimes, so please throw it over there if deemed appropriate.

Thank you

There train needs to fit into a slot on extremely busy East Coast mainline (as well as serving customers who are only catching a train along that part of the route). The only realistic way to do this is for the train to drop into slot which would normally be occupied by the next diverted service, which is normally going to be half an hour or an hour later.

Yep trains just awaiting their slots, it didn't used to be as bad for the Newcastle services as they picked up the LNER stopper slot, but since the recast there is no slots. Congested infrastructure at each end of pennines, as well as Leeds reversal make it not the best.

The Newcastle services are running in two different paths at the moment - the traditional Manchester Airport - Teeside path West of Leeds, and the Liverpool - Newcastle path North of York.

South/West-bound this works ok, as the diversion via Methley adds roughly 15 minutes vs going via Micklefield and the paths are 15 min apart in the "right" way at York - the 15 min on the diversion puts it perfectly in the path through to MIA from Leeds
North/East-bound however, the paths are 15 minutes apart but the "wrong" way - in essence 45 minutes apart. This is why there's 15 minutes wait at Leeds and then another 15 at York. 15 (Leeds) + 15 (diversion) + 15 (York) = 45min additional journey time

Thank you for the above. Basically as I thought, trying to fit square pegs into round holes.

I'm not sure that the general public would have a Scooby Doo about it though!
