Tickets sold while time restrictions are relaxed

I've got a question that has been prompted by some of the actions by TOC's today.

Quite a lot of them (including FGW) removed time based restrictions on tickets. So off peak tickets were being accepted during this mornings peak.

Now, if you turn up at a station and ask for a ticket during this time, should you be sold the off peak ticket (as opposed to the normal anytime ticket that you would be sold)?

And if you are not offered it, is there any chance of a refund of the difference? (I didn't bother mentioning it this morning as the station was quite busy and as there is only one person selling tickets from an avantix machine in a hut at this station, I didn't want to hold everyone else up).

I believe you should.

Yes, I believe you are entitled to a refund.

Surely there is a difference between, as a matter of good service, choosing to accept tickets already bought that would have otherwise only bern valid at a different time, vs having to sell tickets at that rate?

I agree. Though others on this forum have basically been saying "buy a £5 advance and on Monday it becomes a day ALR"

It depends on the wording of the relaxation. Something like "passengers already holding Off-Peak or Advance tickets may travel at any time" is different to "All time restrictions are lifted"

I suspect the purpose of these announcements was more to do with allowing off-peak ticket holders to travel in the afternoon peak, when the long distance routes are normally restricted (e.g. out of Paddington).

Or was it intended mainly for Advance ticket holders but badly put across?

What time did this announcement appear, because to be of any use in the morning peak people would have had to know before setting off to buy their ticket?
