Ticketing Merseyrail

This may sound a stupid question but I've never travelled on merseyrail before so please forgive me

On Friday 14/04 I am travelling from Grimsby Town to Little Sutton

On Saturday 15/04 I am travelling from Little Sutton to Aintree and back (for the Grand National)

On Sunday 16/04 I will be travelling from Little sutton back to Grimsby

I purchased all my tickets on Avanti app for this using my 26-30 railcard and selected ticket on departure which I intend to collect from Grimsby Town station

Am I right in thinking that my national rail tickets can be used for my journey on Merseyrail on getting to my destinations?

Yes, Merseyrail is part of National Rail and accept all tickets to their destinations as any other company would. They can be funny about e-tickets but you certainly won't have any issues with printed tickets.

Something to note is that from Little Sutton to Aintree you change at Moorfields, on the way back you change at Liverpool Central. Presumably you have an Anytime Day Return for this part of your journey, with Railcard discount applied. This is the best deal for you, as Merseyrail do not offer Off Peak returns, and do not discount the off-peak Daysaver.

Yep anytime day return, I noticed there is no railcard discount on off peak day saver so decided to get anytime day return and save some money

Little Sutton to Aintree. going to Aintree i'd change at Liverpool Central rather than Moorfields, particularly as trains to Aintree are going to be heaving with race goers, you're most likely get a seat by changing at Liverpool Central.

On the way back, i'd change at Moorfields, again as you're most likely to get a seat even though Ellesmere Port branch trains are quieter than Chester branch.

Merseyrail is my local TOC, so i know the tricks of where to change when trains are expected to be busy.

And there's usually a 12-minute wait for the connecting train, both ways...

There will be a frequent service of 8 trains per hour to and from Aintree on 15 April, but even so it will be very busy. Not easy to see how there could be a 12 minute wait.

Whenever I go to the Grand National I use Old Roan for the return journey in the early evening. It's just under a mile from the racecourse entrance (so c.20 minute walk) but it means you'll get a seat, on the first train rather than queueing for 2-3 trains and then standing!
