I think you'll struggle to find value in it if you haven't already.
However, sadly, the rail companies aren't there to provide value for money - they're there to make as much money as they can - their first responsibility is to their shareholders.
If they can get 100x£100 fares or 200X£40 fares they'll probably go for the former.

Indeed. People have different ideas about what constitutes value for money. It depends on what the individual feels is importnat to them, and as has already been pointed out, may involve a lot more than a comparison ebtween the direct costs of driving and the cost o the train.
So whne someone states that TOC's should provide value for money fares, I'm not sure how that could be implemented, or by whom. It could be argued, and frequently is, that Advance fares are good value, but of course that doesn't help with short notice travel.
I'd be interested to know what Penaltyfines would consider a good value fare for two people for a London - Bournemouth round trip.
