Ticket validity

Tonight I shal be travelling from Whaley Bridge to Heaton Chapel to compete in a backgammon tournament.
I shall but an off peak return ticket.
I would hope to return on the last southbound train at 2215.
But if I am delayed there is the option of getting the 2238 train to Manchester Piccadilly and then the 2308 Buxton train to Whaley.

If I take the latter option would my Whaley to Heaton return be valid for that route or would I need to buy a Heaton to Manchester return?

Surely you would just get the 2312 and change at Stockport (and there must be bus services to Stockport as well). You would need an additional ticket to go to Manchester and back, and it should be from Stockport as the train to Whaley Bridge doesn't stop at Heaton Chapel.

The 2312 is a tight four minute connection at Stockport. As for buses: since they don't run to a timetable it is difficult to plan

The 192 bus runs from Heaton Chapel* to Stockport every 10 minutes between 22:25 and 00:15. How much of a timetable do you need?

At £9.80, an Off Peak Day Return from Whaley Bridge to Manchester Stns is just 50p more than that from Whaley Bridge to Heaton Chapel. Both are route "via Stockport".

And Heaton Chapel station to Stockport station is quite walkable - Google Maps says it would take 37 minutes.

The 192 bus runs from Heaton Chapel* to Stockport every 10 minutes between 22:25 and 00:15. How much of a timetable do you need?

I have often had to wait twenty minutes or more for a 192 with, inevitably, three arriving at once.

@BingMan. How did your planned journey go on Tuesday evening?

Unfortunately according to the routing point calculator Manchester is not a valid routing point for Heaton chapel to Whaley bridge and it's way more than 3 miles out of your way. So I'm pretty sure it's not a valid route (for some longer-distance journeys it *is* valid to go via manchester, all depends what the fares were around the time of privatisation)

Best option if you want to travel out direct but have the option to return via Manchester is probablly to buy a return from Whaley bridge to Manchester at the start. It's about 50p more than a return to Heaton Chapel (assuming off-peak).
