Ticket validity query

My son has bought an off peak return ticket from the Northern Trains website for a return journey today from Ilkeston to Sheffield - both outward and return legs being made today.

The ticket apparently says it is valid via any permitted route, if that is relevent to the query.

Simply, he wants to know if he is limited to the hourly Northern service back from Sheffield to Ilkeston, or is the ticket also valid on the East Midlands service between the two stations.

I assume it is but would rather rely on the expertise of this forum than my own assumptions.

Many thanks for any advice.

Both are fine :)

Doubling-back via Nottingham is also a permitted route, if the train does not call at Ilkeston.

Thanks very much for confirming that, and as above, guess you mean Sheffield - Nottingham - Ilkeston is fine if a service doesn't call at Ilkeston
