Something that I'd always assumed was that you could buy a ticket from any single station to any other single station. Has it always been the case that 'no fare exists' for many possibilities? I know the number of options would be huge but it seems daft that it isn't possible.

Is this with online booking engines? It is most of the time possible to buy a ticket, but the booking engines won't sell it to you if they can't find an itinerary where you could use said ticket.
Have you any examples to mind?

I don't know how many there are, but I know of a couple in the Manchester area for which I know some people are over-paying and some under-paying, simply because a through fare or season ticket does not exist, and despite my attempts to let the relevant people know (by the methods they suggest), there has been no fares introduced.
Naturally some pairs of local stations don't need through fares, but for all the other possible journeys over the network there should really be atleast one through fare.

I believe that for a year or two Ebbw Vale had no fares through to Alloa (both are relatively new stations and no fare had been set).
Also someone found a fare from somewhere in North Wales once to Settle that no booking engine would allow to be used (possibly there was no permitted route?)
Also stations next to each other but with no trains calling at both stations often have no fares, at least if this has always been the case (Yarm and Eaglescliffe come to mind).

Glasgow Queen St to Glasgow Central.
One has to buy a return to Partick as Queen St and Central are treated as the same station - despite being 10 minute* walk apart.
*I'd say 10 minutes average. Call it 6 or 7 if you're young, fit, and running to catch your connection. 15/20 minutes if you walk slower or are tired. Or take that inter-station bus, ha!

No fares exist from Brigg to Rotherham (and quite a few stations in South Yorkshire). See www.fixmytransport.com/problems/3635 for Northern's not-very-helpful response to the issue.
Quicker Queen Street-Central than the other way- as it is downhill all the way!
