Right, quick question

I have an off-peak return NOT-Wakefield Stations (either) via SHF

I bought it at the rate (£20.70) for the 09:45 service leaving NOT

The 09:15 service also travels via SHF to Wakefield, but has a higher price associated with it; However, it also says "Off-Peak"

Can I use the ticket on that service?

The £20.70 return is an Off-Peak Day Return (fare type CDR) associated with restriction B1 (outward travel by any train except those timed to depart Mondays to Fridays before 0930; return travel by any train).

Therefore your ticket is invalid for travel on a service departing Nottingham at 0915.

But the Off-Peak Return (fare type SVR / £29.50) is valid on that service on question. Despite also being set by Northern and routed via Sheffield, it has a different restriction in place – restriction 2O (both outward and return travel allowed on all trains that depart after 0900 on Mon-Fri, all trains on weekends).

I figured there was no way that would be possible, but I wondered why.

It's not exceptionally obvious from either the ticket or the website.

Indeed, all those different restrictions can be confusing at times.

But you can use BRFares.com or a recent Avantix Traveller CD to look up the different fares and restrictions associated with them.

A lot of this arises because Saver Return and Cheap Day Return tickets sometimes had different restrictions but were both given similar names when the "simplification" happened.
