Well if I buy a ticket at the station before I travel I'm hardly likely to be able to copy it... And here's one TOCs requirements for delay repay:

TOCs regularly waive that requirement, I can assure you, in the interest of good customer service. London Midland even have a Delay Repay function on their App, whereby you can take a picture of the ticket with your iPhone and upload it with the relevant details.

I cannot think of a single TOC that will refuse a complaint because they haven't been sent the original ticket. TOCs will accept proof of purchase in lieu, whether that be a copy of the ticket, a receipt, booking confirmation, or bank statement.

But surely the 'receipt' is the ticket itself?

When I travel I do not copy my ticket; do not receive a receipt; nor booking confirmation; and buy with cash.

Lincoln station has little notices on the barriers saying that if you wish to retain your ticket then go to the member of staff running the gateline.

Tickets have serial numbers. Any claim would hopefully record the ticket number, so if someone else made a claim then alarm bells would surely ring?

So does Potters Bar but for a different reason - the trains are outside of the TfL zones for travelcards but the buses that run outside the station (2 routes out of 4/5 major ones) accept them! So FCC say you can retain your outboundary travelcard to use on the bus if you ask (presumably asking someone to code the gates to not retain them is harder than printing a professional notice ;) )

Except that the terms explicitly state "Remains the property of the issuing TOC." I suspect the answer really is that any 'authorised person' can retain a ticket, but that's not the actual wording of the terms.

That also raises a question "If I bought from RedSpottedHanky or TheTrainLine, who is the issuing TOC?"

Technically, it's the ticket issuer who acts as the TOC's agent..

Yes, you cannot claim Delay Repay on London Midland *unless* you do it through the app.

That was sarcasm by the way. Jeez.

Correct. There are a few other ways to safeguard against fraudulent claims too, not that I'd discuss them.

Then you need to retain your ticket if you are delayed and wish to make a claim. As I said, TOCs waive the requirement if you provide proof of purchase. If you pay in cash, don't copy the ticket etc, then yes you will be in the minority of people who will actually need to produce a ticket.

The vast majority of delay compensation claims my employer deals with come via email, and original tickets are not required.
