. . .There is no (hopefully!) any consideration of any dispute or prosecution from this as I used the booked trains and my Senior Railcard is in date – I only renewed it last December!

. . .When I collected my tickets for my trip to my Sister's this weekend just gone, I got five CCST style tickets from the TVM at Walsall :–

a) Walsall to London Euston ;

b) London Underground Z1-3 to Newport ;

c) Newport to Tottenham Hale ;

d) Lundon Underground Z1-3 to Walsall;

e) Seat Reservation Coupon detailing trains booked on outward journey.

Ticket c) from Newport – Tottenham Hale was kept by the gate on interchanging between Tottenham Hale N.R. and Tottenham Hale L.U.

. . .Is it usual for the N.R. gate at Tottenham Hale to retain a ticket to that station ? It's more usual for them to give me the ticket back, even at the end of the journey?

Most ticket gates will retain a ticket when it's at the destination station shown on the ticket.

My experience is it depends on who operates the gateline, operators that have been using gates for a long time tend to retain, wheres those who introduced them more recently tend not to,

The ticket's validity expired upon leaving Tottenham Hale NR station, so it's quite normal to have a ticket retained byt he barriers when this happens.
