Hi,

Yesterday I purchased a first class ticket from Downham Market to Kings Cross for £94, I got to Downham this morning printed my ticket and got on the train - no problem. I then travelled from Kings Cross to Cancery Lane, had my meeting then headed home.

When I got to Chancery Lane station I could not find my ticket, I spoke to a member of staff who told me that in order to get back to Kings Cross I needed to by a zone 1 travel card then I could reprint my ticket at Kings Cross.

Once At Kings cross I was told that tickets could not be reprinted, and that in order to get home I would need to purchase a new ticket for £54. My question is this; I had my printed receipt from the ticket machine this morning, and my email confirmation and booking reference confirming my original ticket purchase. Why is it not possible for The rail company to reprint tickets in these scenarios?

Thanks

Joe

Because there is no way of deactivating the old ticket, it is a sad part of human nature that if tickets were reprintable, a number of unscrupulous individuals would sell the original ticket, have it reprinted claiming to have lost it and then use the reprinted one themselves.

A ticket from the machine is transferable like a banknote. It doesn't have your name on it and it can be used by anyone. So, even though you can prove you took it out of a machine, you can't get it reprinted.

I thought the National Conditions of Travel says tickets are non-transferable unless otherwise indicated, with the exception that they can be purchased on behalf of another person? The intent being to ban resale anyway. But I see the point made, it is likely to go undetected.

Yes, they are officially non-transferrable, but there is basically no method of enforcement.

The only way to solve this (barring true e-ticketing where an old ticket could be deactivated) is to put names on tickets and require ID, which would be more trouble than it would be worth. I think the former solution will come in time though.

On a separate issue if you're travelling from Kings Cross St Pancras to Chancery Lane it's quicker to get the H&C/Met/Circle line to Farringdon. Chancery Lane and Farringdon stations are very close.

I do this journey and I always walk it via Grays Inn Road. It's a 20 minute brisk walk and probably only 5 minutes longer than going via Farringdon once you factor in the time getting down and up from the platforms, train running time and the walk to your destination at the other end.

And presumably the OP didn't have a contactless debit card they could have used to get back to Kings X rather than buying a zone 1 travelcard?

If a ticket is purchased on an itso card is that possible to be reissued to another card if lost?

Hypothetical since there two itso cards I have are unused....

Academic as AFAIK tickets on ITSO cards aren't available from Downham Market and while I'm generally in favour of new technology the half arsed way the railway is implementing them means they create as many problems as they solve.

Completely unenforceable and only in there so there's something to point to if you are caught reselling a ticket.

In practice, tickets are transferable.

I rather suspect that if you lost a smartcard, only unused/non activated tickets or seasons would be restored.

I don't know as the key doesn't allow single/return tickets to be purchased for then anymore (after a short period where you could, unofficially). That was supposed to come in last year but didn't, and nobody seems to care. As such, we're preferring to issue mobile tickets on paper, albeit self printed (some will say this is great and works fine for flying, but not everyone has or wants a printer these days - and I've had paper jams at the most inopportune moments).

Regardless of discussion about smart cards and transferability of tickets, the situation for the OP is clear in the National Rail Conditions of Travel:
4.5 If you lose or mislay a Ticket or it is stolen, it will only be replaced or (subject to the specific conditions associated with the Ticket) refunded provided that the original Ticket can be cancelled. In such cases you should apply to the Train Company or Licenced Retailer from where it was purchased.
