Do TOCs keep records of individual ticket sales (online, self-service or over the counter)? I would presume so in order to handle refunds but then how does this work with tickets issued/sold on trains?
As in one purchased online & printed out? Nope. Just curious how they handle all the data, I recall reading somewhere that TfL keep track of all purchases but not sure if TOCs do too.

And if it is deemed necessary the details of the individual transaction can be looked up. For example, when an Avantix issued ticket is handed in for refund by someone claiming that the ticket was bought from a guard standing on the platform, it can be established exactly when it was purchased what the transactions before and after were and (where relevant) what card was used for payment. usually enough to be confident that the original story was BS.
