Hi,

There have been multiple incidents at Frodsham station where the ticket Machine has taken money from a card but not printed any tickets.

I have 2 queries, these are new machines only 12 months old so I assume are an inferior product to most stations.

Also I do not want to use the machine anymore, am I ok to buy on the train even though the machine sometimes work?

Many thanks

Does the machine accept cash and card, or just card?

Is there a manned ticket office?

The TVMs at frodsham are supplied by ATOS Worldline/SHERE which are typically considered to be the better quality in the market! I think they are both of the card-only variety.

Frodsham doesn't have a ticket office.

There is almost certainly a fault with the machine, and there is a strong possibility that money has not been taken from the cards. If the machine does not print, the transaction will not be completed and payment will not be taken. However, this may not be immediately obvious as the machine will have taken an authorisation from the bank in order to get to the printing stage. The authorisation will remain in place for a few days.
Has the machine been reported as faulty? If it has it could be placed out of service remotely.

Have you told the TOC concerned ? Worldline machines generally don't charge if nothing is printed as Haywain has said

Shouldn't a new all-singing top-of-the-range machine be able to put itself out of service if it's not printing?

Our Shere machine does. The only reason it would not would be if the ticket printed but got "stuck in the chute" as ours has a tendency to do!
Not true. I've seen machines continue in service whilst failing to recognise their own inability to function. In such a situation it can take a long time for anyone to notice unless a fault is reported to staff.

Hi,

It is a card only machine. I have been told people have been charged and no tickets have been printed or at least not appeared. I personally have had a return ticket only print the return journey, I approached the guard and he said the machines are not operated by arriva trains wales and so not a lot he could do, but did let me travel. A local facebook page has appeared with lots of comments about the machines at frodsham and I wanted to offer advise as lots of people say they do not want to use the machines but I would be worried of prosecution as it is the first oppotunity to buy?

Have a look on the machine. On the Greater Anglia ones, there is small print that says you can instead use the station help point and tell them where you are getting on if you cannot or don't want to use the machine.

He was wrong, Arriva Trains Wales manage the station and therefore will operate the ticket vending machine. He therefore could have taken the initiative of reporting the fault. However, the OP or any other customer could also do so.

This has happened to me too - machine at East Croydon.
I thought the transaction had failed when no ticket appeared so I went to another machine to get my ticket. A few days later - checking my card statement - I found that in fact I had been charged for the first transaction, even though no ticket was printed.
(I disputed the charge through my card company and the charge was removed).

Maybe they meant the machines are managed by an external company on behalf of ATW and ATW staff don't have access to them?

Did ATW not trail somewhere if a customer was having trouble using a TVM then a window will appear with a member of staff guiding the user though buying the ticket.

What like the video helpers you get on some Amazon Fire tablets/phones, and some websites?

I bet in the case of the railway, you'd see an RPI appear who would ask for your details and give you a penalty for not having bought the right ticket already!

Yep - there's a Great Northern ticket machine at King's Cross that does this where they can see you and take control of the screen. I don't think you can see them though.
