Ticket machines inside gatelines

Never noticed before but London Bridge LU Northern Line gateline has a single ticket machine inside the gateline.

Why?

There are two ticket machines inside the barriers at Leeds. I have occasionally used one to collect a ticket for a future trip while waiting for a connection. Often seem to be out of service though.

Finsbury Park has some. Presumably for people switching between national rail and underground so they don't need to exit the station. Or they might be left over from when the gatelines were on the platforms which used to be the case there.

Darlington also has one inside the gate line on platform 4.

Frequently see customers sent to them barrier staff, usually customers arrived on northern services who have not purchased a ticket.

Chester has one on P3 next to the ticket window. Funnily enough it seems to sell a hell of a lot of Bache to Chester singles so people can exit the barriers! (1 stop outside Chester)

Portsmouth Harbour definitely has one inside the gateline, I saw that and thought that it must be for passengers coming from the ferry?

Manchester Piccadilly has one on the overbridge, though whether that counts as "inside the gateline" is debatable given that the station doesn't have a coherent gateline.

Glasgow Central Low Level has one in the narrow corridor. For some reason though, the option to collect pre-paid tickets wasn't showing.

I came across one at Hereford last week. A passenger off a train, travelling without a ticket, was told to go and buy a ticket from it by the barrier staff.

Presumably, it was being well used late evening when I was there, Preston ticket office was shut so was needed

Wonder where the "origin" is on such tickets bought upon arrival at Blackpool North? Hopefully Preston not Layton.

Fairly sure that there is a row of TVM's opposite the ticket office window at Preston available when the ticket office is closed.

I think it is inside the gateline, I've never seen staff not blocking the entry checking tickets to the platforms next to the concourse.

Yes, however if you enter via the lift to the link bridge lounge then it's your closest ticket machine, and at least in my experiance I very rarely meet ticket checking staff when using that lift.

Not sure what would happen if you got ticket checked entering there and did not have a ticket, whether the staff would let you proceed to the ticket machine on the bridge, or whether they would send you back to the main concourse (personally I use an annual countycard for local travel).

Why?

A few years ago I had a new railcard put on my Oyster on that machine, annoyingly the staff member doing the approval wanted/had to do it on that one so the journey I started by walking through the barriers didn't have the discount applied IIRC.

Yes, I was there today. The LNER machine has been removed and there is a sign on the Northern machine saying ticket collection only.

Seven Sisters has two inside the the LUL gateline but in the NR part of the station.
