I went to my local station twice yesterday to buy a ticket for today, and found the office closed on both occasions. Why is it that they can have machines on the Continent that will sell you a ticket for a different date (and even from a different station) but here we have machines that sometimes won't even sell you a ticket for later in the same day, e.g. an off-peak ticket when it is still peak hours?

Cost. A lot of the current machines (eg Shere FastTicket) have been around for 20 years or so and, although they receive periodic updates, there is little or no incentive to introduce better ones with more capabilities.
Time for new machines, been to Italy & Switzerland recently & their newer machines handily multiple languages, and many tickets! easy to use and handle international cards.
Surely something based on a Internet site like Trainline, with some local tickets could be designed to avoid reinventing the wheel
