I have a season ticket and am always very careful not to get it anywhere near magnets or devices. On three occasions at my local Virgin station, the ticket has been rejected with code 08 which apparently means "gate failed to recode ticket correctly". Any subsequent tries with the ticket return code 09 "damaged or corrupted ticket", meaning I have to get a reprint. Do the ticket gates actually write data to the ticket each time? Could it be possible that it is the ticket gate corrupting my ticket?

Sounds like it.
The gates change the encoding to show where and when they have been used. The ticket can be read then in the case of problems. This isn't designed really for season tickets, but single use ones.

This happened to my new staff pass the second time I tried to use it at St Pancras, it spit the ticket out with a bad noise and gave error code 08 and everywhere after that I tried, it gave error 09!

Yes, a code 08 means there has been an error when writing to your ticket (the gate writes to the ticket when it passes through). This causes the magnetic strip to become corrupted.
