A colleague of mine wishes to travel from Arlesey to Oxford Circus next Tuesday.
They don't really want the expense of a one day travel card, so what will be the cheapest option for them? They don’t have a debit/credit card, so can’t do contactless on TfL.
Off the top of my head I suspect an Arlesy to London Underground Zone 1 ticket might be the cheapest way of doing it. Each portion valid for one journey in Zone 1. The Forum ticketing site will sell them for instance:
The Split Ticketing Champions - Compare Fares and Get the Best Value For Money Through Split Tickets and Booking Cheap Train Tickets Online And On Our Mobile App, Etickets To Your Phone, No Booking Fee, Save Up To 90%
tickets.railforums.co.uk
Whether that's cheaper than a Return ticket to London + a paper single each way on the Underground I'm not sure. There's also the issue of getting it! I'm not convinced a TVM will sell it and I suspect a ticket office will try and issue a Travelcard. So unless someone else can buy it and collect it for the person to then use on Tuesday it might be tricky to get this fare.

Arlesey has a ticket office which is supposed to be open until just after midday on weekdays.
I would’ve thought a ticket machine would be able to issue it as well as it’s a reasonably common ticket although nowadays most people would simply use contactless for the underground part of the journey.
Yep thanks for that, forgot the fact that a return would be needed and it looks like I mis-copied the numbers from the single fare finder.

Does it make any difference if get Thameslink to Farringdon, then Elizabeth line to Bond Street (the eastern entrance at Bond Street is in Hanover Square, 1-2 minutes walk from Oxford Circus)
Can you avoid the Underground that way, especially if don't have contactless
A ticket to Zone 1 London is going to be best, and I would look to purchase it the day before if wanting to purchase in cash from a ticket office at a small station in case the ticket office is unexpectedly closed or the TVM won’t issue it, or isn’t accepting cash on the day of travel.
To be honest I really don’t know anyone without at least a debit card these days. It might be worth your colleague considering a pre-paid debit card for use in these sort of situations (suspect they might have similar issues in orher aspects of everyday life admin).
I hate to think that someone like this pays £13.40 when they only need to pay £5.60

No. That wouldn’t work as a ticket to Zone 1 is needed to exit at Bond Street, unless there is a cheap Arlesey to somewhere like Acton Mainline ticket where a break of journey could be used but exiting and entering at Bond Street would not be hassle free.
