Hi,
On Saturday I'm going from Preston to Cambridge on a Virgin Train to Euston and then a First Capital Connect from King's cross to Cambridge.
I was wondering if the current situation continues where Virgin are offering Ticket Easements to allow people to travel the next day whether or not that applies to the whole journey (which has been booked as a through ticket by Virgin) or would I be allowed to travel on the Virgin Train on the Sunday but be made to buy a new ticket for the second leg of the journey?
Thanks for your help

I've no idea what the official word is on this, but I think it'd be a very harsh FCC guard who made you buy an additional ticket

today I will mostly be at home decorating
Ring or email FCC would be a good idea, how can Virmin authorise an easement on somebody else's train, they cant, virmins easement only applies to virmin!

If the ticket is not valid, its not valid end of. Okay with the state of things as they are more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt but it isn't a given and it most definitely is NOT a right!

virgin were allowing all ticket types from yesterday to travel today but there were no plans to contiue this to the weekend, we ran mostly a good service today (all be it with a few delays and some pre-emtive cancellations) so were not taking tickets from tonight tomorrow

For future reference - I was told today that when a TOC allows tickets to be used the day after they were valid, they are not valid on the Underground (even when their original validility states they are).

think there are very few underground staff that would uphold this rule, most gateline would understand during times of disruption and tap you through

A few delays?

Unless the data im looking at is completely inaccurate

Roughly 27/60 VT Services off Stoke were cancelled today
and another 15 services were running between 10 and 45 minutes late (over half were 30-45 late)
That means only about 13 trains ran within 10 minutes of the advertised departure time i.e. "on time"

No offence but that's hardly what id call a good service, from a passenger point of view

I honestly doubt it. If they're not advised of ticket acceptance, they won't let you through - and even if you do, you will be penalty fared if you are check by an RCI, despite the fact a member of staff let you through, as you have no valid ticket.

A Cambridge to Preston Any Permitted fare includes travel on LU and on FCC, LM and any other applicable operator, therefore that must be honoured. It is Virgin who set the conditions of use for that ticket, not anyone else. Other TOCs can give you more rights, but they cannot give you less. If anyone attempts to charge you, get their name and ask for details of their manager, refuse to pay and put a complaint in. If anyone attempted a Penalty Fare, then the media would be interested in the story and I am sure Passenger Focus would get involved. If a video was obtained then that can be very good evidence, as Ian Morbin found out.

Yes there are Basil Fawtlys out there, and they must be dealt with accordingly.

Virgin have announced that "Customers with tickets dated for travel on 7 January may use them today. Customers with tickets for travel today (8 January) will be allowed to use them on services on Saturday 9 January. This includes all Advance Purchase tickets."

Does anyone know if the easement on advance tickets means you should travel on the equilavent train, or whether you can travel on any train?

Yup - the xx20s from Euston and xx15s from Manchester were cancelled all day, both of which run via Stoke, so it was reduced to an hourly service for Stoke.

It wouldn't make sense to say you had to travel on the equivalent train, e.g. if I want to get the last train from Euston to Manchester and decide to stay overnight at a friend's house, it would seem logical to want to get a train the next morning and not be stuck for 24 hours.

The roads are not providing a good service either ;)

Actual journeys to Stoke last weekend during blizzard conditions on the Pennines:-

Saturday 2 January
York dep 10:00 Stoke arr 15:25 (5h25) (by coach; 10 min stop at services, nearly crashed, no compensation available)
York dep 11:28 Stoke arr 13:50 (2h22) (by train; 30 min stop at Man Picc, no safety incidents, compensation available if late)

Thanks for your help, as the weather looks like it will be better on Saturday than Sunday now I'm gonna go on the Saturday and hope for the best. (And as there are no more easements its a bit of a moot point)
But thanks for your help
