Hello I'm writing this today for advice I went to plymouth from liskeard with a friend of mine on the 11th of march we didn't buy a ticket yes very wrong but we were just being drunk and stupid however we got caught and we got a ticket I said to the ticket person could I just pay the fines now and forget about it as it was my birthday next to me I paid for both of our fines because it was my fault we did it so then nearly a month later I got a letter through the door saying I needed to pay my fine and that it doubled any help would be amazing please

GWR state that you did not pay the penalty fare (which would have been £58.50 up to 2 April), but are giving you time to pay the increased amount that is now due.

If you have evidence that you paid the original amount (bank/card statement etc) then tell them immediately.

Did your friend also get a letter? You say you paid both "fines". That suggests that you both got Penalty Fare notices. Did your friend get/keep any paperwork issued on the day?

I’d hope the RPO (and/or computer system) would make such impossible.

A rather confusing letter! It is not a settlement offer! It is a penalty imposed upon you that the law now requires you to pay. The referenced deadline of 21 days to pay is fiction. Rather, that's just the time they must give you to pay before they can take enforcement action and the period during which there is a £50 discount.

As others said, you need to determine what you actually paid at the time e.g. by checking bank/credit card statements.
You've missed the deadline for an appeal, so if it wasn't paid, pay it now.

Indeed in these circumstances I would do this regardless of whether or not you can find evidence it was paid before; you will eventually be able to get the overpayment back if so but paying now heads off any risk of further escalation.
