Is this an acceptable method for marking a ticket partially used mid-journey with 2 further trains to complete the itinerary?

From my perspective this is now a damaged ticket.

Attached photo of ticket corner missing.

I don't think that's acceptable, no. Especially since it appears to be a period return, so you could (subject to any contrary restrictions in the restriction code) break your journey many more times at intermediate stations over subsequent days or weeks.

Any marking should leave the ticket legible and keep it intact - as it stands, I wouldn't even put it through a ticket barrier as it might jam the mechanism.

Tricky to say how to proceed - there isn't anything in the NRCoT that envisages this scenario for single/return tickets, rather than season tickets.

Perhaps consider contacting the TOC whose staff member (guard?) ripped your ticket, asking them on social media to confirm that it's valid for further travel. They might be unwilling to do so but I suppose it's worth a try.

When this happened I immediately objected but the conductor said what he did was was fine.

I asked for the whole ticket back (refused!) and then I insisted the ticket be endorsed to explain what had been done with conductor's ID.

I stated that in all my years travelling on the railway I'd never seen this done. My concern was that there could be trouble down the line, with another ticket check potentially asking questions and deeming the ticket invalid. In my view, a passenger should not be put in that awkward position.

The conductor came back with a pen and endorsed.

Not planning to take this any further. Just hoping it never happens again.

NRCoT states "You should not tamper with a Ticket in any way. If you do so it will not be valid for travel.
4.8 If a Ticket is damaged to the extent that it is not legible and cannot (where applicable)
be scanned or otherwise validated, it will not be valid for travel. However, if you return it
to the Train Company or Licensed Retailer that sold it to you, they will arrange for a
replacement Ticket to be issued to you unless there is reason to suspect that it has, or
will be, used for fraudulent or improper purposes. You may have to pay a reasonable
administrative charge (not exceeding £10) for the replacement."

I didn't have time to get a replacement ticket when changing trains and on the next train there was no ticket check.

Who did that? What a wally. I don't advocate tearing tickets, but if you are going to tear a paper ticket for a revenue protection reason, basic rail staff 101 is you tear it slightly through the magstripe so it's still legible to anyone who wants to check it visually but knackers the chances of it operating gates and a colleague who may be revenue protection has to take a physical look at it...
