Has anyone here been a ticket clerk at a station before? I am going for an interview soon and would be keen to know more about the job and the sort of questions they might ask in the interview itself. So any help would be much appreciated.

Morning,

Which train company are you interviewing with?

I'm currently Ticket Office staff but as I had my interview many years ago, I can't remember what I was asked at my interview.
I suspect your questions will be mostly about customer service and train company knowledge. Possibly something to do with times when you've dealt with angry customers, as we're one of the first people customers speak to in times of disruption. Good luck!

Same here. I remember having a test on reading a timetable and selecting fares, but that doesn't happen anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if the questions are even more generic than that. Stuff about how you've solved a problem, how you've helped a colleague, that sort of thing. I'd like to think there would be questions to ascertain your knowledge of the railway and of geography, but I won't be holding my breath.

It's funny you should say that- that's one thing which my newer colleagues seem lacking in, so presumably where I work, that isn't considered. I certainly don't remember being asked any Railway/Geography based questions at my interview either, other than what do I know about the Toc.

It's for Greater Anglia. I've been a Postie for 23 years and I think it's about time for a fresh change.
I've been doing some research on the types of tickets, saver cards. Reading up on the FAQ's section of their website. I do use the service a fair bit too for trips into London, so I hope I can use alot of this information if any questions come up.

My only worry is that, with the way things are going will the ticket clerks still be needed as most people buying tickets online or off the app. This job would be with Greater Anglia, if they did start closing ticket offices, are they likely to move you into a new role? Have you had any discussion about this?

I don't think anyone really knows what will happen in the future. I don't know whether you'd be offered an alternative role. I wouldn't like to guess because there's so much uncertainty at the moment.

You were spot on with your assumptions of the questions. They asked 4 questions, pretty much about how you've helped someone in need, How you improved or come up with an idea to do something better in your workplace. I did the best I could, just wish I had spoke a bit more about myself to begin with, but there's always something you think you should have said! Thanks for the help, even if I don't get it, at least I've had a bit of insight into working here. I should find out in a couple of weeks.
