Perhaps they should introduce a new type of platform ticket that expires after, say, 30 or 60 minutes and will only operate the gateline at that station.
Or, introduce a charge for a platform ticket that is refundable (via a machine, so you're not queueing up) within 1-2 hours, thus ensuring people have an incentive to leave the station, the TOC gets some money if someone does use it to pass the gates and also lets you monitor the number of people supposedly saying bye to family that jump on the next Intercity service and hide in the toilet.. !
