Ticket barriers at Stockport

No problems :P LowLevel put forward some interesting points about how to catch people and offer good service; unfortunately Northern have a lot of work to do to get staff up to ATW or EMT levels of visibility.

Regarding my journey obviously the barriers were open at 2330, the guard didn't leave the cab and of course there was nobody checking at destination. All very surprising...

In defence of my colleagues at Northern, they are far from the worst in this area. One major hindrance is Northerns rules on dispatch - if northern units had door controls in as many places as EMT and ATW units have, and they were actually allowed to use them, they might be able to do more than they currently can. And I'm never going to criticise a guard for not doing revenue at 23:30 on a Friday night. As a guard, if you get assaulted chasing after a MAN-SPT single, your employers aren't likely to thank you for it!

A further issue with the present arrangements is that there are no toilets or newsagent In the station concourse or on Platform 0. So originating passengers waiting for a service to Norwich, Cleethorpes or Buxton have to go through the barriers twice if they want to access the facilities on Platform 2. Similarly passengers arriving on Platform 0 who need the toilet before leaving the station. This adds to the congestion.

And will a ticket like Liverpool to Stockport be accepted by the barriers for entry or will they have to queue up and explain they want to use the toilet to be manually let through, slowing down things further.
