Ticket Barriers and Mobile Tickets

Hello,

I have booked a return journey for two people and it is a mobile ticket.

Please could someone tell me if it is possible to transfer just one person's tickets to another device so that we can get through ticket barriers easily?

I assume I can't just scan one ticket and us both going through, so will it be case of having to show both tickets to staff at the manual barrier?

Last time I done this with a mobile ticket, I found it easiest to throw the phone back over the barrier for the second person to scan themselves through (flicking to the second code at the same time). It’s possible to do fairly quickly if switched on and you know what the plan is, but I’d agree it’s fairly annoying.

I’d guess this is another limitation of MTickets compared with ETickets.

It’s easiest to stand to one side so you scan your phone but allow your companion through first.
Then, swipe to the next ticket while they pass through, and scan yourself through the gates behind them.

Agreed.

However m-tickets are an absolute pain, so my advice to @AndyP would be to switch to a retailer that doesn't issue m-tickets, and stick to e-tickets (or paper tickets, where e-tickets are not available)

e-tickets have none of the drawbacks of m-tickets; they are not tied to a specific device, so each person can have their own ticket (and, optionally, the tickets of any companions for redundancy) on their own device and you could even print them if you like.

There are plenty of threads on the forum on this matter.

Although screenshots of M-tickets (as opposed to E-tickets) are definitely not valid to use for travel, if you did manage to take a screenshot without the app blocking it then, in my opinion, using the screenshot to pass through the barrier (while the actual valid ticket is on your friend's phone next to you, or even on your own phone but inside a more faffy app) seems similar to tapping your staff pass or Oyster travelcard to open the barriers without the faff of taking your paper ticket out of your wallet. Do you think some regulation would prevent opening the barriers either using anything other than the ticket used for your journey (maybe that's passing through the barriers in an incorrect manner), or specifically using a screenshot of an m-ticket (maybe that's forgery/fraud of some sort)?

An e-ticket is issued as a PDF.

An m-ticket is in app only*.

There are various threads detailing the differences between them.

My advice is to use a retailer that does not issue m-tickets, to avoid any possibility of being issued one. I use a split ticket provider and obtain e-tickets wherever possible (one PDF file for all tickets booked within the journey makes things nice and easy).

(* To complicate matters, some retailers can issue tickets in both formats)

A lady in front of me at the Waterloo barriers on Sunday offered up the same phone three times, opening the gate each time, so letting her two children through first then herself.
Obviously I've no idea exactly what sort of tickets it held, but she didn't appear to change anything between times. So it seems to be possible to multi scan some tickets at least.
