Came back on the horribly delayed 19:10 (no fault of Avanti - trespassers on line) from Euston a couple of days ago and there was a ticket audit team on board. Not Avanti staff but some other company ( I didn't take the details).

Any ideas who they were and what is the difference between a ticket audit and a ticket check?

Edit: for some reason I typed Aviva. I meant, of course, Avanti.

Were they making a survey? They sometimes do that from what I read here

Else, any revenue check would have been through TfL (since the only Arriva trains running from Euston are the Overground), TfL doesn't, as far as I know, outsource revenue protection

Was it a "ticketless travel" survey? Not entirely sure exactly how they work, but I believe the idea is to try and get an idea of how many people travel/board without a ticket and the reasons why.

All TOCs are subjected to ticketless travel surveys, the results of which are reported to the DfT. TOCs are measured on their ticketless travel performance.

I had one on Chiltern very recently.

In my view they didn't do a very good job of explaining who they were / what they were doing / that participation was voluntary, but did admit who they were when I specifically asked.
