Ticket advice needed. Broad Green to Preston

Hi all,
I'm just looking for some advice on how I should buy tickets from Broad Green to Preston. I don't want to book online, I would rather get my tickets from the station. I've looked on the National Rail Enquires website and The Train Line but I can't seem to get the answer to my question on either website.

Next week, I need to travel from Broad Green station to Preston station, however, I will need to change train to get to my destination.

10:25 Broad Green - Warrington Bank Quay 11:01 (Northern Rail)
11:14 Warrington Bank Quay - Preston 11:38 (Virgin Trains)

The problem I am having is finding out whether or not I will need to buy two seperate tickets, one for the first leg of the journey, and then one for the second or whether I can buy a ticket that will cover both legs of the journey.

I hope I have made my post clear enough. If not just ask and I'll try to make it clearer.

Any help will be appreciated.

You can buy a single (meaning one, not one way travel) ticket to travel between any two points on the rail network, be it Reading to Reading West or Penzance to Inverness.

It might not always be cheaper to, but that's another story :roll:

In short, just buy a single/return ticket as appropriate at Broad Green station, and you can use it on both legs of the journey, there and back in the case of a return.

This is cheaper than splitting the ticket at Warrington. Indeed, the Anytime Return is 10p cheaper from Broad Green. Splitting tickets is not always cheaper, and it is sometimes cheaper to go further.

How about Blackpool North to Blackpool South?

If you check the fares on the National Rail website, and it shows an icon with the label 'You will need to buy more than one ticket for this journey' underneath then you will need to buy more than one ticket. (e.g. Broad Green to Southport via Wigan)

It doesn't show this for Broad Green to Preston via Warrington so that's how you can tell that it's ok. (in theory anyway - it's not completely correct - but you should be allowed to do anything that it says is ok)

You can buy tickets between almost any sensible pairing of stations, plus some totally bonkers ones too (like Burscough to Burscough bridge!) and also some that are rather dubious (Hellifield to Clitheroe, Skipton to Colne, etc) but probably a bit cheaper than a taxi if there was no bus and you weren't in a rush!

I'd put Blackpool North-South in the totally bonkers category!

Looking at the Routeing Guide instructions:

Is the route the shortest route from the origin to the destination? = No.

Is the customer travelling on an advertised through train? = No.

Use the Routeing Guide. There are 4 options, and the last one, map WG appears to allow travel from Huyton (the appropriate Routeing Point for Broad Green for this journey) to Preston via Earlestown and Warrington.

Therefore you do not need more than one ticket, and your journey is valid.
