I have to go on a trip to Datchet, Berkshire on either Weds 14th or Weds 21st March.

I have to arrive the by 9am, and will be leaving around 1pm on the same day

Can you tell me please the cheapest way of doing this.

I will be travelling on my own - no rail cards - adult fare

I am willing to drive to Stowmarket or Bury St Edmunds station if cheaper! (Depending on the saving!)

There is no saving when travelling from either Stowmarket or Bury St Edmunds.

There are Advance tickets from as low as £16 each way which you may be able to book for your journey, the above option is the most flexible though as there may not be Advance tickets during the peak period!

EDIT: Not sure if I've understood your post OP, was it Datchet in Windsor area?
The 05:41 from Thurston gets in at 09:17 with changes at Cambridge, Tottenham Hale and Vauxhall.
Then you have a 12:56 for the Return part with the same changes as above.

Agreed the question is not clear. The title suggests the OP is travelling to a Datchet in Kent, whilst the first post states they are travelling from Kent to Datchet. Not consistent enough to estimate what is meant so could you clarify mawallace?

I don't think there is a Datchet in Kent, I just took the most logical interpretation of the OP's post, however I agree that it'd be good to get some clarification!

There are no (official) connections that would get you from Thurston/Elmswell/BSE to Datchet before 9am (09:17 is earliest).

Best place to drive to would be Cambridge - a return from there would cost £44:50 and the 06:18 departure (change Tottenham Hale and Vauxhall) would get you to Datchet for 08:47

Parking in Cambridge may be a problem though.

My recommendation would be to drive to Stowmarket [SMK] and split at Manningtree [MNG]:

SMK - MNG; 1x SDR = £12.10
MNG - DAT; 1x SDR = £51.30

Total = £63.40

This may not save you money, depending on the fuel efficiency of your car, but will definitely get you to Datchet in time and you should be able to park at Stowmarket easily enough, especially given the time of day [see below]! NRE suggests that Stowmarket car park has 347 spaces, charged at £4.60 during peak times (presumably for the whole day). Based on this and the split suggested, you will have £7.90's worth of fuel to play with before this idea becomes more expensive. (That should be more than enough to get from the Thurston area to Stowmarket and back.)

Times:

0530 from SMK calls at MNG so changing trains is not necessary with this split
1326 from DAT use the 1530 from LST which calls at MNG so chaning is not necessary with this split (or, if you can make it, the 1500 and change at Ipswich)

In practice though, you are probably better off putting up with the M25...
