I am looking for advice on "off peak" tickets between Thurston and Chelmsford.

The total fare is £24.80.

I need flexibility, so off peak is probably the most suitable ticket!!

I am doing the outward journey in Saturday 20th July, and need to arrive by 10am. The problem is the return journey, which could be any time between 3.00pm and 7.00pm!

Do you mean Saturday 21 June 2014? If so, you have no problem. The OFF-PEAK RETURN THURSTON - CHELMSFORD ESSEX has Restriction Code CZ, which allows travel at any time on a Saturday.

If the returning on a different day (within a month of 21 June 2014), the return times will not present a problem because Restriction Code CZ has no afternoon restriction.

But the price will almost certainly have increased from £24.80 by next year.

The advice by John @ Home above still applies as your outward date is a Saturday.

I cannot find any splits that can save you money either. Not all fares can be reduced by splitting, and yours certainly seems to be one falling into that category.
