Through journey combining Oyster and paper tickets

A little advice please.

This Saturday my mother-in-law and daughter intend to travel from Walthamstow to Southend either

a) from Walthamstow to Leyton by bus, then underground to Stratford, then National Rail to Southend or
b) Overground from Walthamstow Queens Road to Barking, then National Rail to Southend

both with return the same day.

My M-i-L has a Senior Railcard and Freedom Pass and my daughter has a ZIP 11-15 Oystercard.

For M-i-L it's easy - the Freedom pass covers her to the boundary of Zone 6 just past either Shenfield or Upminster depending on the route taken and she then needs a super off peak day return from BZ6 to Southend.

The child Oyster fare for the 'within London' part of the journey of £0.75 would need to be combined with a ticket from Romford (as I believe Southend trains don't stop at Shenfield) or Upminster and this means that they would need to alight for her to scan her Oystercard on both the outward and return journeys.

Is that right?

If so, is there any other combination of using the child Oystercard with a NR ticket without having to get off and wait for the next train that doesn't cost too much extra?

Oyster PAYG must be touched in and out, otherwise you may be charged for not tapping out within a certain timelimit.

Southend Victoria trains do stop at Shenfield.

But Shenfield is not in zone 6. Harold Wood is the last station in zone 6 while Brentwood and Shenfield now accept Oyster but with fares above the usual zonal ones.
