I'm looking to travel from Bangor (BNG) to Pickering on Monday 19/3/18 returning Wednesday 21/3/18. The Coastliner bus website states:

"Whitby, Pickering, Flamingo Land, Eden Camp - From any staffed Rail Station in the country, passengers may purchase Single or Return tickets to any of these places. Travel by train to York and then continue your journey by Coastliner bus, on the one ticket, at an inclusive price."

However I cannot get a fare from BR Fares or NRES. I also tried to input Manchester and various other stations but the only place I found to work was London Kings Cross.

Any suggestions please ? Thanks.

I think the fares are only available on flows set by VTEC. I can certainly get one from Rye (Sussex).
It may be to do with the fact that the fares assume that you will change to the bus at York whereas I think the buses actually start from Leeds where the like of TPE would be the bus companies competitors?

I have a feeling that in the mists of time the Coastliner appeared as a sub table ( one of a few, such as Peterborough to Kings Lynn and one in the Scottish borders) to table 26 in the National Timetable from York anyway and it was an Eastern Region sponsored service. It would be useful sometimes.

If you're travelling on TransPennine Express, you should consider staying on the train via York to Malton and changing to the bus there - it would be quicker.

The bus station Malton sells a cheap multi-trip ticket that can be used by multiple people, although it wouldn't be cheapest for just a single person making one return trip.

But the extreme loading of many train fares to/from Malton (vs. York) makes this often a substantially more costly option than the lesser increment on the bus fare. Even more so for those of us with an ENCTS pass.

Fair point! It's worth comparing. A particular irritation of mine, because I only use TPE between York and Malton, is that no period return train ticket exists; you have to buy two singles.

If you are going to the NYMR make sure you plan your trip carefully. The buses are not as frequent as you might think especially on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Pickering taxis also appear to be non-existant
