I notice today that due to Engineering Work between Gloucester and Bristol Parkway, XC services are being diverted via Chepstow and Newport (reverse and also advertised to call). The services are reduced from 2 trains per hour to 1 between Birmingham and Bristol and I accept extended journey times would involve additional trains and the pathing constraints.
The question us " How do you get 2 trains passsengers into 1 on what is already a very busy route and subject to overcrowding ? Is this taken into account at all ?
In addition, I discovered myself from Journey Planners that some passengers from South Wales to change at Birmingham were being directed to change at Newport and change into these services instead of using the Cardiff to Nottinghams. This is because of the timings of the XC and their calling at Newport threw up a different scenario and because computerised systems cannot think for themselves or use discreation it meant 3 trains of passengers being crammed into one train.
I recall that during yhe Xmas/New Year period 2010/2011 XC reduced from 2 an hour to 1 on the route and got caught out with disastrous overcrowding results. They were forced to return to the normal 2 per hour 2011/2012.
Any members got any views on this as this type of situation often arises in the case of Engineering work

In some cases (but not all) CrossCountry are pretty good for this and double up voyagers during engineering works when services are reduced to hourly.

Due to extended journey times it may be fair to assume that demand won't be quite 100% of usual levels.

In the late eighties at Paddington they would sometimes cancel a Network Express which consisted of a 50 or 47 plus 8 or 9 mk IIs and substitute a three car bog unit. Then to add to the overcrowding the guard would order everybody out of the guards compartment on safety grounds. I preferred to get a later service and retired to the King & Castle for an hour.
