There was quite enough chaos as it was, over 11,000 delay minutes and counting.
Frankly it doesn't matter whether the control centre signals 5 or 50 miles of the Brighton main line, if the centre is evacuated this is the sort of disruption that will ensue if that centre covers Croydon.
Such alarms are less likely in ROCs because the fire protection systems are far, far better than in 30 year old signalling centres. Equally, the kit inside them is of a higher standard and less likely to heat up enough in the first place.
I can think of at least 5 occasions in the last 4 years where one of the four large signalling centres in Anglia has had fire evacuations similar to this; so it is not that rare.
In comparison, to my knowledge, the longest serving of the new build ROCs (EMCC at Derby) has not had one in the 5? years it has been open. Small numbers in the sample admittedly.
