Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
In order to keep on top of the sentiments from those stuck up Drumpf’s rear end I keep a regular eye on rumblings from the /r/conservative subreddit. A place usually devoid of reasoned opinion due to the comedic mod policy where users can defend the undefendable without a second thought or fear of their insane reckons being removed.

And yet with Hegseth’s new announcement of live-streamed executions even some of the most loyal denizens there are voicing doubts..there is open dissent in the ranks.

Guys it’s time we start to realize this presidency is getting a little weird. To say the least …

List of countries with public executions: Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen, North Korea, Somalia, and the USA.

We're just going full bread and circuses here?

I know the Bible is in support of of capital punishment and I am as well. But even with scum like this guy I don't like celebrating his death or turning it into anything other than a regrettable necessity. It all feels very wrong spiritually for me.

Naw. Don't like that. That's some isis ****

It would be quite something if in their bloodlust and craving for maximum media attention they end up accidently making people sympathetic with a guy who, by all accounts, probably does deserve the death penalty (even speaking as someone who is opposed to the death penalty!). Honestly the bar is in hell and yet somehow they've managed to sneak under it.

I feel sure that 99% of us would have been satisfied if this character had been killed while committing his murders. In days of old such crimes would have been tried within 7-10 days and the execution swiftly performed. Any public element would have been in front of a few thousand maximum, mostly local people, even for the worst offenders.

A quick private hanging, guillotine or other method might be acceptable to over 80% in cases with no elements of doubt like this.

But this one has brought in long delays due to appeals, 17 years so far, and it seems they're not at an end. That's one issue.

Execution in front of a few witnesses, like relatives of those slaughtered, may be acceptable for over 60%.

Execution by firing squad in a military context may also be acceptable to many for this man.

However the combination of all this with live streaming to multi-millions who can record and retransmit it worldwide for decades to come makes one wonder how far it's been thought through.

Martyrdom is one danger. Emulation and precedence claimed worldwide in all sorts of twisted ways are others.

Hegseth may have to go through with this to save face. He'll have a battle.

Who loads the weapons and who gets ordered to pull the triggers?

The ‘special relationship’ is an empty vessel but, more shockingly, I can’t think who qualifies as an allie of the US currently.
Hence why I put it in parentheses, I have long believed it to be nothing more than a empty, purely transactional one. The 2nd Trump regime has merely stripped any and all pretenses to the contrary away.

72 hours notice? No, do the same as Trump would do and declare that it's effective immediately.
Yeah, upon reflection, that's a far better way of going about it. I always end up being far more decent and diplomatic than these murder clowns deserve; really must work on that.

Next up in the US descent to a failed state:

It's already a failed state - it became one the moment he got back in - this is merely another notch on that particular bedpost.

Contrary to many Republicans stating it not to be the case. America First means America Alone.

Oh to have been a fly on the Oval Office wall when that was announced! :D
Not worth the risk of being hit by flying ketchup imho.

And this year's response to the Nobel Peace Prize not ending up in Trump's grubby fingers begins... (BBC link here)
The Trump administration has imposed sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying it wants to restrict the tribunal's resources and ability to operate.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures - which include a ban on US entities making transactions with the ICC - were intended to "defend US sovereignty" and accused the court of seeking to prosecute Americans.

The ICC said the measures were an assault on the rule of law and the foundations of the international legal order.

The announcement comes just hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

US President Donald Trump has reacted sourly to the Norwegian prize's choice of winner this year and last, after having expressed a desire to receive it himself. He criticised Pillay for being part of a panel that accused Israel, as well as Hamas, of war crimes during the 7 October conflict.

The US says the ICC has no jurisdiction over it as it never ratified the statute founding it - but the international court has investigated US actions elsewhere.

Rubio said Trump would not allow the ICC to prosecute Americans, adding: "Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC."

The petulance, whinging and self-martyrdom is, as always, off the scale, entirely predictable and makes one wish that one of those sodding cheeseburgers will finally do the planet and humanity a favour and drop-kick Trump off the mortal coil. 'Defending US sovereignty' my left buttcheek.

Long past due to offically declare the US a rogue state, never mind a failed one.

Vance trying to save his own skin:

US Vice-President JD Vance has cast doubt on the Pentagon's plans to livestream a firing squad execution of the Fort Hood shooter.

Talking with reporters, Vance expressed doubt that the December execution would move forward as planned, saying: "I don't know that that's actually going to happen".

He added, that "if it's through live stream, I'm not going to be watching it". Vance described the actions by former US Army major Nidal Hasan as "the worst terrorist attack on American soil outside of 9/11".

Hasan fatally shot 13 unarmed US soldiers at a base in Texas in 2009, injuring another 32. His execution by firing squad would be the first military execution in more than 60 years.

The Pentagon announced earlier this week it would execute Hasan on 3 December 2026 by firing squad.

Then on Thursday US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the execution would be livestreamed for the public.

"People need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things," said Hegseth.

The BBC has asked the White House whether Trump supported the plans.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Vance said: "I see these announcements. I don't know that that's actually going to happen."

The vice-president condemned Hasan's actions. Vance noted that Hasan, who was a US Army psychiatrist, was meant to treat soldiers for mental illness and other problems and "took them at their most vulnerable and gunned down these people where they lived".

There's an argument that if the death penalty is regarded as a deterrent it is logical to carry it out in public (as was the case in Britain until 1857 I think), and live streaming would be today's equivalent. But I think that to do this would be barbaric. In this particular case the motivation of the killer was unusual; it's the kind of thing that few people would be inclined to emulate and those that would probably wouldn't be deterred by the possible consequences. If the live streaming goes ahead it will indicate just how horrible the administration headed by Trump has become.

I once read a science fiction story in which the 1960 presidential election was won by Nixon, and some years later they have public tortures in America. That idea no longer seems inconceivable.

There was also the 1935 novel 'It Can't Happen Here' about a populist US president who morphs into an authoritarian dictator, some of the similarities to the Trump regime are frightening.

Extract from the plot summary on the novel's wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Can't_Happen_Here

In 1936, American Senator Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip enters the presidential election campaign on a populist platform, promising to restore the country to prosperity and greatness, and promising each citizen $5,000 per year (equivalent to $116,000 in 2025). Portraying himself as a champion of "the forgotten man" and "traditional" American values, Windrip defeats incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Democratic nomination, and then beats his Republican opponent, Senator Walt Trowbridge, in the November election.

Having previously foreshadowed some authoritarian measures to reorganize the government, Windrip outlaws dissent, incarcerates political enemies in concentration camps, and trains and arms a paramilitary force called the "Minute Men" (named after the Revolutionary War militias of the same name), who terrorize citizens and enforce the policies of a corporatist regime. One of Windrip's first acts as president is to eliminate the influence of Congress, which draws the ire of many citizens as well as the legislators themselves. The Minute Men respond to protests harshly, attacking demonstrators with bayonets.

In addition to these actions, Windrip's administration, known as the "Corpo" government, curtails women's and minority rights, and eliminates individual states by subdividing the country into administrative sectors. The government of these sectors is managed by Corpo authorities, usually prominent businessmen or Minute Men officers. Those accused of crimes against the government appear before kangaroo courts presided over by military judges. A majority of Americans approve of these dictatorial measures, seeing them as painful but necessary steps to restore American power.

If this was written today rather than 91 years ago, no one would believe it was anything other that a reference to Trump, the fictional president's name also sounding like it could be a euphemism for fart is the comedic icing on the cake.

Zelenskyy furious as Trump announces deal to buy Russian diesel

US president says agreement needed to lower fuel prices, but move likely to create fresh crisis with Ukraine and Nato allies

Donald Trump is on a fresh collision course with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European allies after his stunning agreement to buy Russian diesel upended years of US and western pressure on the Kremlin to end its war against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy reacted furiously to Trump’s announcement of the deal with Vladimir Putin on Friday, calling it “absolutely terrible” and “not fair and not honest”.
The Ukrainian president said “back room deals” with the Russian leader would give Putin more chances on the battlefield. On Saturday morning, Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian attack had killed 12 people in the south-east, including three children, and Moscow claimed its troops were advancing in the east.
which beggars belief. I knew trump was primarily self-interested, but I never imagined he would abandon sanctions just to try to get cheaper fuel in the USA ahead of an election!

Hopefully it will influence all Ukraine-linked voters over there to vote any way but MAGA...

MAGA will probably blame Zelensky by saying his bombing of refineries was part of a conspiracy to keep diesel prices high so Democrats could get elected and write him another blank check. Probably also why Trump is also beginning to pull back on Iran as well because he needs to convince the American voter by the midterms that he has their best interest at heart by bringing down fuel prices. That said this feels like I'm giving him too much credit by suggesting he's cunning enough to formulate such a plan and not botch it through another disastrous decision made on an impulse.
