Thoughts on the Trump presidency

Another case to add to the long list of why the Presidential pardon and commuting sentences should be removed:

US President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of George Santos, a former Republican congressman serving seven years in prison for fraud and identify theft.
In a post on social media, Trump said Santos "has been horribly mistreated", adding: "Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"
The former lawmaker was only the sixth in US history to be expelled from Congress, after a damning ethics report in 2023.
Santos, who admitted to stealing the identities of 11 people - including from his own family members, was serving his sentence at a minimum-security jail in New Jersey. He was released on Friday night, US media report.
"God bless President Donald J Trump," said one of Santos's lawyers, Joseph Murray, following Trump's announcement.
In April when Santos was sentenced a judge told him: "You got elected with your words, most of which were lies."
He reportedly cried in court and begged for forgiveness, saying: "I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the road ahead."
Prosecutors argued that the novice politician had lied about his background and misused campaign funds to finance his lifestyle.
In his post, Trump justified the move by criticising a Democratic lawmaker, Senator Richard Blumenthal, whom he accused of fabricating his US military service.
"This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!" Trump wrote.
Trump has previously called for an investigation into Blumenthal over the claim. The Democrat has acknowledged that he misspoke on numerous occasions about his time in the military, but has said the mishaps were more than a decade old.
"This allegation of 15 years ago has been really rejected by the voters of Connecticut three times, overwhelmingly re-electing me," Blumenthal told CNN earlier this month.
Santos's downfall began in 2022, after the New York Times published an investigation revealing the freshman congressman had lied about his CV, including having a university degree and working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
From there, the lies continued to pile up, including allegations that he stole money from a fundraiser for a dying dog and that he lied about his mother surviving the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Shortly afterwards, local and federal officials began to investigate.
He was eventually charged with 23 federal felony crimes, and in 2023 became the first expelled member of Congress in more than 20 years, and only the sixth in history.
A report from the House ethics panel accused him of misusing campaign funds for personal benefits, including Botox and subscriptions on the OnlyFans website.
Santos defeated a Democratic incumbent in 2022, flipping the district that encompasses parts of New York's Long Island and Queens, where he grew up.
Earlier this week, Santos published an open letter to Trump in the South Shore Press newspaper in Long Island, repeating his plea to be pardoned.
The letter, which was titled a "passionate plea to President Trump" asked for "the opportunity to return to my family, my friends, and my community."
He wrote that he had been kept in solitary confinement after a death threat in August, and apologised for his actions.
"Mr President, I am not asking for sympathy. I am asking for fairness - for the chance to rebuild," he wrote.
"I know I have made mistakes in my past. I have faced my share of consequences, and I take full responsibility for my actions.
"But no man, no matter his flaws, deserves to be lost in the system, forgotten and unseen, enduring punishment far beyond what justice requires."
Santos began serving his sentence in July.
Trump has issued pardons to at least two other former Republican lawmakers since returning to office in January.
In May, he pardoned former congressman Michael Grimm, who pleaded guilty in 2014 to tax crimes.
He also pardoned former Connecticut Governor John Rowland, who pleaded guilty in 2004 to corruption and fraud charges.
Commutations do not void criminal convictions, unlike a pardon.

I have a suspicion this weekend's No Kings demonstrations will spur him on to reinvoke the Insurrection Act, because that's the sort of madness MAGA is delighted to foist upon the country now.

So Israel is back to bombing Gaza. That incredible ending of war didn't last long.

Hands up who is surprised?

Hands up who thinks this won't lead to a continuation of such actions to allow Israel to once again proceed in taking over FULL control, which then leads to issuing those lucrative contracts to rebuild with the people of Gaza expected to leave.

I saw a report somewhere (can't quote) that suggested Hamas was reportedly attacking Gaza residents, which might enable Israel to claim they're bombing Gaza for humanitarian reasons - and further push for taking over control, again for the safety of Palestinians.

I can't remember where I saw it earlier today, but I still believe all of this has been carefully calculated. There was/is no way Israel was just going to end actions and say no more.

Get everyone to go back and think they are safe, then start the bombing again. You'd have to be delusional to think this was all over.

Gentle reminder we do have a dedicated thread for the war in Gaza so comments here really need to focussed on Trump rather than the war more generally please :)

Who told him that was a good idea?
Who told him the video where he draws a sword with people kneeling for him was a good idea?

Why haven't world leaders contacted him and said 'that's f***ing ridiculous, stop being a tw*t'?

What ambassador, world leader, person of power and responsibility does this (apart from 'brutal' Third World dictators)?

Many leaders will be diplomatic in order not to risk upsetting him. As will ambassadors or other officials from other countries.

However, that doesn't mean that the media from within the U.S.A. and from other countries, as well as commentators and especially comedians shouldn't absolutely rip him to shreds on these things.

If almost everyone is laughing at him and saying what an absolute fool he is, he may, just may, think twice before doing this again.

If however that doesn't happen, he will do it again and again....

He's most likely delighted that people are reacting to this instead of Epstein and the more sinister things he's doing.

Has Trump got a sense of humour? he is more likely to be sitting in his playpen, demanding his aides, bomb Chicago to rubble, then where's my burger, and everyone breathes a sigh of relief, I think that Epstein will bury him, either the constant fear of what might come out, will cause him to have a fatal stroke, or the actual report will end his presidency because those who are the real power, will tell him go, or we will make you go,

It sounds like his administration have now called off the planned Trump-Putin summit in Hungary which was meant to be happening this week. I think Poland had already said it would intercept and escort Putin's plane to land if it entered its airpsace (since he is under an ICC arrest warrant). Bulgaria had said that Putin could cross its airspace, but from the sounds of things European leaders have convinced Trump not to sign any deal with Putin that would involve the handover of territory in Ukraine, which has probably put the Kremlin off meeting him for now. This is a little bit of a shame because it had felt like he was trying to bring peace to Europe, though I doubt Russia intended the same.

When the two met in Alaska earlier this year it felt as though the talks got nowhere (the press conference was unusually short with Trump speaking for just a couple of minutes after a longer speech by Putin where he reaffirmed the Kremlin narrative), and it sort of seemed as though Putin set Trump up.

If anyone wants to know where the Epstein files are, try underneath that rubble:

Parts of the White House's East Wing have been demolished, as construction begins on US President Donald Trump's new ballroom.
Construction crews on Monday tore down massive chunks of a covered entryway and windows in the East Wing, which Trump said is being "fully modernised".
The president previously said that his $250m (£186m) White House ballroom addition would be "near" the existing structure but would not change it.
"It won't interfere with the current building. It won't be. It'll be near it but not touching it - and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of," Trump said in July. "It's my favourite place. I love it."
Trump announced the construction in a social media post, saying "ground has been broken" on the "much-needed" ballroom space.
"For more than 150 years, every President has dreamt about having a Ballroom at the White House to accommodate people for grand parties, State Visits, etc," he wrote.

He said the project was being privately funded by "many generous Patriots". Their identities remain unclear as the White House has not released any names of who might be funding it.

The White House has served as the historic home of the US president for two centuries. The East Wing was constructed in 1902 and was last modified in 1942.

From the south side of the building, the BBC saw several large pieces of construction equipment - some adorned with US flags - near the East Wing.

Trump wrote in his post that the East Wing was "completely separate" from the White House, though it is attached to the main structure.

The covered entryway, which spans much of the East Wing's south side, appeared as though it was being gutted, with concrete debris and metal cables clearly visible from several hundred metres away.

Now we are going to have an Arc de Trump with spare cash from the donations left over from the Trump ballroom:

What we know about White House plans for an 'Arc de Trump'

Watch: Trump unveils prototypes for a triumphal arch in Washington DC
ByNardine Saad and Kwasi Gyamfi Asiedu

US President Donald Trump wants to build a triumphal arch across from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, the latest in his efforts to make over the capital city in his style.
The so-called Arc de Trump would commemorate the country's 250th anniversary next year and is reportedly being privately funded by Trump's supporters.
A real estate developer by trade, Trump teased plans last week with renderings for the structure being laid out during an Oval Office meeting.

*expletive here*

I remember not so long ago DC being such a nice place to spend time in.

Remember Obama's fun little dig at a potential Trump White House, made during his White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2011?

Image showing glitzy joke mockup of the White House under Donald Trump, complete with gaudy gold columns and pink neon signage

I still think he'll have already 'gone' quietly by then.
Ha yes fair! But assuming natural causes don't play their part, if he is still in post I reckon there's not a cat in hells chance he leaves. Indeed the rhetoric mounts as well:

“We don’t want it to happen again. We can never let what happened in the 2020 election happen again,” Trump said in the Oval Office Tuesday.

He suggested FBI director Kash Patel and intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard are investigating the results.

“I know Kash is working on it. Everybody’s working on it. And certainly Tulsi is working on it. We can’t let that happen again to our country,” he said.

As I've said for a while (or I've been thinking anyway!) the US will have elections in 2026, 2028 and onwards. They won't be free or fair. Only thing that's changed is a reckon that Trump will run again in 2028 (if he's still with us).

They might depose him internally but I reckon that will only happen if they find someone that they can actually unite themselves and the party behind. I reckon the issue at the moment is that Vance (the obvious successor) isn't all that popular and there isn't really anyone else.

Assuming medical science keeps him upright I'd imagine he'd still be shuffled out the door to maintain a wafer-thin veneer of democratic normality for the sake of world opinion. It would also require the 2028 election to be well and truly rigged to keep his MAGA progenitors in whatever's left of the White House.

Yes some extensive rigging would have to be required, given almost every swing voter and a critical mass of the Republican base would not vote for Trump solely for trying to run a third term. This would also mobilise a very sizeable chunk of Democrats who may have stayed at home last time to vote this time, even if their candidate isn't very good.

It isn’t who votes that counts, but who counts the votes.

Another world leader in the 1930s was fixated by architecture...
It's amazing how much death and devastation happened just because someone didn't buy certain paintings. I wonder what particular business deal rejection in the 70s/80s triggered the current state of play in the US?

Do people still think he's going to go quietly in 2028?
Hmmmm let me think for a moment..... No!

I suspect that by early 2028, assuming nothing else happens, Trump will hit the campaign trail claiming that the election is already rigged, and it won't be a fair election, and in fact the election should be suspended until Kash Patel (or whoever takes his place) has conducted a in-depth into the radical left & the main stream media have been investigated and sent to jail. He'll rally his ailing support base, and eventually hint that they might have to do another January 6th, and when some nutters try it he'll blame the radical left, the mainstream media, Biden and anyone else he can.

Honestly I can see 2028 being a total ****-storm in the US, with even more upheaval and violence than has been seen during any part of his presidency. Trump will do anything to either hold on to power, or at least set in motion the beginnings of a Trump family dynasty. We're going to need to order plenty of popcorn for it, but on the bright side I suspect that a certain Reform leader might find the temptation to fly over and help Trump's campaign out if things aren't going well for his party by then.

Trump has been laying the groundwork for a while now. His argument is that his two terms weren't consecutive, so he can go for a third one. Clearly nonsense, but when he has the Supreme Court stuffed with his supporters, who is going to argue?

Unless cholesterol gets him, he'll run in 2028. And the Republicans will lap it up. Swing voters? Probably not, but that's OK if you gerrymander them out of the way by changing electoral boundaries. Which is what they've been doing.

I also seriously doubt the election will be either free or fair.
