Thoughts on a European Meet?

Hi,

Anybody else interested on a RailUK Interrail/FIP meet?

If anybody knows here of a European version of RailUK, we could all meet up for a few days (anything up to a week) and find lots of new people sharing common interests.

My next A/L is for three weeks in October, so lots of time to plan.

My first (very vague) thoughts are:

Meet in regional groups in the UK. Make way down to London StP via rail. Arrive for a Eurostar departure of 1pm, (1pm departure leads to an arrival time in Paris suitable for catching a sleeper).

Then Eurostar London-Paris.

From there I need suggestions, but probably more cost effective to use a sleeper for accom overnight.

I appreciate this may be difficult for under 18s, or those with no passports, so everybody's comments would be appreciated on how this could work, or even, if anybody is interested.

On a serious note, I wouldn't recommend anyone - especially those under 18 - going away abroad with a bunch of strangers they have never met before.

See although that is fair advice- the same risk is attached to meets in the UK. There are certainly additional risks abroad, but the people on here could be anyone.

I do think RailUK Moderators should consider their responsibilities in the meets, UK or Abroad as it is arranged via their Forum.

From a legal point of view, I would recommend a disclaimer if you don't want any responsiblity or liability.

Eh!? :? We don't have any influence on whether or not people decide to go to meet a bunch of strangers.

By 'considering our responsibilites' do you propose that all eight members of staff go on meets to oversee the safety of everyone etc? Such a thought, IMO, is absurd.

Just like, ultimately, we have no control over what people decide to post on here (although we have to retrospectively make sure all is OK, though) we have no control over what members decide to do with other members off forum.

I did consider that, hence my posting above. Meeting up with a few people to go on a few service trains, a railtour, a gala, etc for a day is somewhat different to a holiday/trip abroad.

I think it's a great idea, and I would hope that those who travel regularly would take advantage of it. Being unable to get time out easily, I myself would say no however.

I think the cost would act as a deterrent for most people. There's also the distances, and therefore a lot of time involved in the meet. And, as has been mentioned, people are already sceptical about meets. To go abroad is another uncomfortable experience, so putting the two together really would put people off.

I for one wouldn't go for all three reasons.

well I'm already abroad and I don't think I'm the only one
