Surely the highest amount to pay would be for either a 7 day standard class or first class ALR? Sometimes I wonder if info to the public like this is counter-productive for the industry - perhaps they should be extolling the value of an ALR instead.

Guess it depends on when you are returning, but for starters, obviously a First Class 7 days All Line Rail Rover is £650.

In my Avantix there is a First Class ticket type OCS route AP London that costs £127.50, so that's £255 altogether. That seems far more reasonable, provided it books you on two HSTs for the majority of each leg, it could be thoroughly enjoyable in FC. I'm presuming you could get quite a lot of freebies off Great Western and East Coast? Having done a journey enquiry via London it shows the following:
13:03 Newquay-Par
15:06 Par-Paddington
21:16 Euston-Inverness
09:00 Inverness-Kyle
would this even be allowed on the sleeper, or will berths need adding to the ticket costs as well?? Another note, the railways only rival would be plane, he we look at an example of a Mercedes E320CDI for similar comfort, with running costs est @56.71pence per mile, the round trip would cost £802 roughly

ALR is no good if you want to return after 2 weeks though

It may very well be the case that nobody is going to buy this ticket, but the railways are so poor at PR and the structure which means tickets nobody would ever buy HAVE to be priced means the facts are poorly presented in the media.

As Barry Doe says in the latest RAIL, Par to Kyle of Lochalsh is £864 return: = £138 more to use the branch.

No sane person would buy these ludicrous XC fares. I think anyone doing this would be mad.

The +London fare is £253 cheaper, and is valid for the entire XC route with the exception of Bristol to Birmingham.

If you really needed to go first class, and were not travelling at a weekend, and you really didn't want to go via London, and were returning after 2 weeks, then you could buy the Not London fare plus a BRI-BHM FOR @ £166 and still save £87.

You'd be really ripped off using XC for this journey as you'd miss out on a meal. A meal is still possible on this ticket, but the connections at Stafford and Tamworth are unlikely to work, so this would involve a couple of changes usually to get on to a Virgin service. Most people doing such a journey would surely want to take at least one of the sleepers via London and have the greater comfort & facilities that via London provides, particularly in FC!

The "Not London" and "+London" tickets would both be valid on both the FGW and FSR sleepers, however space is limited on FSR and they say reservations are "essential" (in reality it's usually only Friday evenings, bank holidays, etc that they sell out). It would, of course, be a lot more comfortable in a berth, and I believe there is no longer FC accomodation on the FGW sleeper (it used to be available, at an upgrade of £10), and the FSR sleeper is FC style seating but all classified as SC. A FC berth would be well worth the money if a FC ticket was already held - not essential, but a "no-brainer" to pay it really!
