Only, on a Pacer, a lot of the time, I look up to find nothing.

If I remember rightly, all 142s had overhead racks on both sides, but some were taken out when they were refitted. THere are a couple of units bouncing around happily with two racks.

Sorry to dig up this thread again, but theres another thing about these units which has been bothering me recently.

As a commuter, usually with a coat and my gym kit in my rucksack, the first thing I do when I find a seat is to put my gear in the luggage rack. Only, on a Pacer, a lot of the time, I look up to find nothing. Now, I don't know how much money it saved back in the mid eighties to leave out some brackets and a few meters of vulcanised rubber, but I find it quite an embarrassment and a nuisence to have to streach over the seated passengers on the other side of the train just to stow my hand luggage. Perhaps they should have just gone wild and spent the extra forty quid. My simmering anger grows ever deeper!

They were taken out during refits, I can't remember the cited reason.

The Merseyrail 507 and 508s had them removed from one side of the carriage during refurbishment too.

Thats interesting - as there's usually one coach with two racks on most of the sets I travel on. I'd be interested to know the reason some were removed if anyone else does!

I'm pretty sure that, when built, the pacers had a luggage rack on one side of each vehicle. I would have checked tonight but fortunately my unit back from the pub in Knaresboro' was a 150!

I'm convinced it was two (one each side), for the reason that I recall a concrete block was dropped from a bridge somewhere and the luggage racks were credited with stopping the block falling totally into the saloon. Does anyone else recall this?

Lucky you - I trust the ale was good :)

Yes it was thanks, the usual selection of about 10 ales on offer - only sampled three of them though - the last train home arrived as i was under the subway between the pub and the platform, perfect timing! Otherwise I would have had to catch the bus... :|

Gotta love a good selection of real ales. Tonight, went to the local 'Spoons, Managed to stay out till 12.30am tonight, got one of the last Metrolinks to Alty and then Taxied home from there. The reason I'm posting is that the 3000 series trams are now out on the Metrolink, and I got one of those tonight. Not impressed at all. They've taken out far too many seats in favour of around a third of the tram being a disabled/buggy area - the tram now seats 50ish rather than 84 on the T series ones. Plus the tram itself seems far smaller in size - coaches of around 10m each, rather than 18m each on the old T-Series. If this is "progress" than I'll stick to the 142's thank you very much.

The new trams are less than two meters shorter. And they are out testing only.

You were drunk :)

Yes, I was  The 3000 was stopped at Mosley Street, waiting the signal, and so I took the chance to have a look through the windows. The comments made still stand; i.e. it seems a retrograde step to go from 84 seats per tram to 54 seats per tram and the trams seem shorter. But yeah, I'll lay off the Guest Ales at Varsity and the £2 cocktails at Font Bar by Oxford Road Station :p

(Tonight's traction was a 323 to Manchester and a Stagecoach "Magic Bus" and then Black Cab home). Again though that raises an issue - how come Stagecoach can refurbish the "Magic Buses" (cheap bargain buses) with decent comfy bench seating, and Northern are taking an age to put similar comfy bench seating on the 142's? They do seem to be dragging their heels...

There will be more of them running as double trams though - and the old trams will have seats removed as part of their refurbishment IIRC.

I was reading an old magazine today and saw the headline:

class 142 derailed as engine falls off onto track

and again it made me laugh, it just sums up class 142s perfectly.

lol wot?

But it is true tho, try going on a 142 out of Sheffield towards Lincoln, thru the cutting its like night time. but on other trains its fine

Cheers, but I do know the difference between light and dark ;) Unless that cutting is darker than a tunnel?

You (seriously) need your eyes checking - I can see to read perfectly well on a 142 in a tunnel. You are exaggerating because you hate the units.

The ex-ATN 142s have completly different lighting to the ex-FNW 142s. Is this where the difference lies? Also I don't think all 142s have all their lights fully working.

Well I guess I kinda hear what you're sayin'

but still the some northern (without proper refurbishment) units are much worse!

THe DfT announcement today on Manchester - Preston - Blackpool electrification raises the prospect of some Pacers being scrapped. That eventuality is mentioned in the Press Release. Hurray.
