This weekend - ideas/help

Due to the Southern day save being unavailable unless you know the special pass code/handshake my weekend plans are stuffed.


Can anyone give me some ideas about what i can do? I had planned to visit one of the south eastern preserved railways and would still like to. I am in MK and will need to travel by train. I don't want to pay a fortune.

The Bluebell Railway is holding a Southern at War weekend, 3 train service with wartime displays, re-enactors and more. A Milton Keynes Central to East Grinstead off peak day return via Kensington Olympia is £28.90, plus the £20 for a day rover 3rd class makes just under £50. You could even then catch the 291 bus over to Groombridge and go on the Spa Valley Railway before catching a train back from Eridge to East Croydon for Milton Keynes. You might need the extra money for a single back from Eridge to Hurst Green if you did that.

I will be travelling ticket inspector on the Bluebell trains that day. Seems the Spa Valley have a model collectors fair, but Eridge is closed, so trains would only be running between Groombridge and Tunbridge Wells West, so maybe you might have to perhaps bus both ways between East Grinstead and Groombridge or Tunbridge Wells, or get a train back from Tunbridge Wells towards the London area. I personally unless you specifically wanted to go to the fair, I would probably save the Spa Valley until a day when it is running fully.

You could leave MKC at 0713, to arrive at Clapham Junction for 0834 (or even get the 0709 from Fenny for a tight connection at Bletchley). Then the 0859 Southern to East Grinstead to arrive at 0947. First train down the Bluebell departs at 1040.

Thanks for the advice - had a great day out from first train to last - even the dressing up people were quite good!!!!
