Hi need to get to Sale for the rugby on Sat so will need to go to Piccadilly then get the tram. With the engineering works on Sunday a mate will be dropping me off in Wilmslow. With my Priv is it best just to get a Manchester any permitted route off peak return?

Thx for any advice

Yes, singles on this route are priced at approx. 70% of a return, and the fares to Wilmslow are only slightly cheaper than those to Manchester. So cheapest just to buy a ticket to Manchester and start short at Wilmslow on the return leg.

Patricroft is the nearest station to the AJ Bell stadium, although it's around a 35 minute walk. If doing the walk during daylight I usually walk via the Port Salford Greenway. Alternatively the tram to Eccles then 67 bus although this can take as long as the traffic is often awful on match day.

I'd buy a ticket from Euston to Patricroft which is the same price and allws travel via Warrington and Earlstown as well as via Manchester.

I'm afraid that's not good advice on this particular occasion because the match in question doesn't involve Premiership club Sale Sharks (who in any event are away at Northampton on Saturday) and so won't be taking place at the AJ Bell stadium (!)

Looks as if the OP is actually travelling up for the Sale FC v Rosslyn Park (National League 1) fixture at Heywood Road, Sale. KO 14:30.

Nearest tram station to the Heywood Road ground is Brooklands Metrolink (5 minutes walk).

Nearest heavy rail station (to interchange on to the Metrolink system) will be either Manchester Piccadilly or Navigation Road/Altrincham via Stockport on the Stockport->Chester line.

Wilmslow will be fine for joining the train back to Euston on Sunday.

Oops! I stand corrected

As a Northampton Saints season ticket holder I should’ve been aware that Sale Sharks are visiting Northampton this weekend!

Heywood Road is a proper rugby ground and I agree with @Mcr Warrior that Brooklands metrolink is the nearest tram stop.

The additional Metrolink fare from Manchester Piccadilly to Brooklands (on the Altrincham line) will need to cover zones 1 to 3. Cost is £3.80 single or £4.30 for a return / day travelcard (depends where OP is heading for after the match, so might not be needed). No priv discount.

The OP could buy a return from London to Navigation Road (same price as Manchester Piccadilly) and change at Stockport and use the Northern service between Stockport and Navigation Road, this all depends on timings etc, then would only need to get the tram from Navigation Road to Brooklands all in Zone 4 single ticket is £1.40. Depending where the OP is travelling, if you use contactless then the correct fare for the zones used will be calculated at the end of the day.

Undoubtedly potentially slightly cheaper, but it's only an hourly service from Stockport to Navigation Road, typically xx52, journey time 15-20 mins, and then you've got to cross the LC at Navigation Road for the Metrolink, so the OP might arrive slightly late for the 14:30 KO at Heywood Road, depending on itinerary / connections.

I'm keeping a close eye on any weather related disruption before I buy my ticket. Not looking good for Friday.
Finished Sale FC 21 Rosslyn Park 17. Assuming that you didn't travel. Quite a few cancellations/late arrivals from Euston today.
