...this website is pointless.

lol im fairly new to this site and atleast 80% of the answers to peoples threads on here is

"no rolling stock"

So really there is no point in campaigning for improved HOW, conwy valley line services etc etc, its a waste of time because there is no stock basicly.

simple as. :)

Comments please, i reckon this thread will be popular.

Not entirely true. There's not enough Diesel stock, and the problem is exacerbated by the numerous cases of DMUs running under wires/over third rail all day whilst there's plenty of 508s etc. in storage which are perfectly adequate for the job.

Question - why is your spelling, grammar and punctuation akin to that of a five year old child?

Answer - no rolling stock.

Im still trying to decide whether you're just trolling...

Assuming you're not for a second:

RailUK is certainly not pointless as a site - just look at the Fares & Ticketing forum as one example and you can see the positive impact we as a community are making.

In terms of the threads where people are dreaming up new routes etc, we are all aware of NR's huge stock shortage as-is - it is very true that there just wouldnt be enough stock (and theres not enough money in this country at the moment to invest in building more to the extent of putting in a whole new route, even ignoring the costs of route learning etc required for any new route). So when people say that is unrealistic because of no stock, they're not trying to be unhelpful, they're just telling you how it is. :)

Just my 2p anyway.

We aren't useless, just the fact is is that there is no spare diesel stock out there. Oh, watch your spelling and grammar too - I got done for mine.

Quite a lot of the stuff on this forum has nothing to do with planning new services ect. which would need rolling stock. Try the quiz forum!

and about it being pointless, I can tell you that this forum does so much for me as a young future railway engineer, planner, OAO manager (maybe) than anything else. (aside from 'Modern Railways' perhaps.) This forum allows me to chat and express my ideas to people who really care about the railways. Believe me, that means so much when you come from a non-railway family.

So I would advise that you leave this forum unless you have anything useful to contribute towards it.

I agree with MikeW here, this site has been so useful to me I now use it for advice on ticketing and encourage others to do the same.

Without this site, I doubt I would have known about split tickets etc...

This thread is pointless! If you don't like a forum, or think it's a waste of time, why bother to post?

There are some sub forums that I don't read, as I have no interest in what is being discussed. Perhaps I should go and post in each one saying it's pointless?

well why can't the admins post a sticky saying that we can't post threads about new services, because we know what the answer will be.

You can though - but if you are being serious and want to be taken seriously BE REALISTIC! Most of mine are done in fantasy, a perfect world, that's why there's so many.

Yes, think how many carriages, drivers, guards, planners, station staff, cleaners and shunters we could get for £70!!

If you want to be taken seriously, then post realistic ideas. And don't throw your toys out your pram when you get a realistic answer.

Indeed, reminds me of a certain member who got banned recently.

EDIT - 3,500th post!

The original comment on this thread is so true, the latest in a long line of 'Achilles heels' to hit our railway system, the lack of stock these days is a disgrace to ALL the politicians involved since privatisation, just as the Railways have come back to the forefront of public transport.
ACTIONS speak louder than words!

Thats it.

If you have a realistic suggestion then you'll be treated reasonably

e.g. if I were to suggest that some of the Manchester - Hope Valley - Sheffield services be extended on to the Sheffield - Rotherham - Dearne Valley - Leeds services (giving places like Rotherham a direct link to the Peak District/ Manchester and places like Hathersage a direct link to Meadowhall) then people would debate the merits (would it lead to conflicting movements, would a delay at Piccadilly lead to problems elsewhere, would it be crewed by "east" or "west" staff).

However, if you come on here and say "i fink that my local station shud av a direct train to London wiv Class 37s and a restaurant service on board" then you'll get a realistic assessment of the merits of such an idea ;)

"no rolling stock"

So really there is no point in campaigning for improved HOW, conwy valley line services etc etc, its a waste of time because there is no stock basicly.

What I try to do sometimes, is try to think of ways to find some rolling stock for a service. For example, I would like it very much if the new 2-hourly service to Fishguard was formed entirly of through expresses to Cardiff, like the current daytime boat train but run with 158s and stops at Carmarthen in both directions instead of just one direction. That would require 3 158s. Were do I get them? My suggestion is to get hold of the 6 remaining available mrk2 DBSOs and fit up 6 47s (or 57s) with the right type of TDM to work with them. You'd need one set spare, but that's still 5 extra trains. Holyhead - Birmingham is normally a 4-car 158, each can be replaced by a single LHCS rake (though you'd have to get on with making the Cambrian so that it doesn't need to interwork with Holyhead - Birmingham anymore). Anyway, those 5 LHCS sets replacing 4-car 158 diagrams releases 10 158s. Hourly Cambrian and 2-hourly Fishguard express shouldn't be a problem (there might only be 4 Holyhead - Birmingham diagrams though, which means you only get 8 158s and 2 spare LHCS sets).

As for Heart Of Wales and Conwy valley, WAG need to be told that spending £600m on a few miles of extra lane on the heads of the valleys road is such a waste when they could afford to electrify the entire present ValleyLines network and buy 61 brand new 3-car 377s to run it with that money. That should free up enough 150s for improvments to services on many routes in Wales, particularly if they can swap 150s for 156s, 155s or pairs of 153s.

There isn't much spare rolling stock about, but what there is needs to be brought back into service. There's even money for new stock about if you look hard enough and realise road building is such a waste.

Whilst I'm not wholly convinced by your idea, at least you've worked something through and "found" the additional stock which will be needed to get what you want. I'm all for constructive suggestions.

As has been said above, this thread is pretty pointless in itself.
