This train will run in reverse formation?

I'm a bit confused. I often check the VTEC website for any service updates and I have noticed that quite often there is an update on an Edinburgh to KX service saying "This train will run in reverse formation between Newcastle and London"

I'm just wondering how this is done. I can understand it when the trains are diverted via Carlisle but this is usually on trains coming straight down the EC Mainline.

Am I just being a bit thick and there is a simple solution how this is done?

Simply by reversing in Newcastle

There are two rail bridges over the Tyne, one at each end of the station.

See map; King_Edward_VII_Bridge is to the West of the station and High_Level_Bridge is to the East.

Sounds like the train will be leaving via the High Level Bridge meaning first class will be at the northern end and the 91 leading down to London (unless it's an HST)

Sort of. They're the normal way round at Edinburgh Waverley (i.e. first class at the east end), it's just that they leave the station the other way to normal.

But yes, the way they change is by reversing at Newcastle and going out of the station north before crossing the High Level Bridge. It happens often enough when there's a fault at one end of the train.

Thanks. looking at that map it makes sense now. I was just a bit intringed as to how they managed to turn the train around.
