This Friday: Crewe to Leicester

I'm going to be visiting a friend of mine in Leicester this Friday. I've been a few times before and I've traveled the following routes:
Crewe - (sometimes changing at Stafford) - Nuneaton - Leicester
Crewe - Birmingham New Street - Leicester
Crewe - Derby - Leicetser

Are there any more routes I can do with not much additional cost to a standard Crewe-Leicester off-peak return? (I'm returning Sunday, which might complicate matters)

Edit: I forgot to mention I have a railcard, which might help things.

You could go Crewe-Tamworth-Derby-Leicester which Crewe to Burton is £23.30 and Burton to Leicester is £18.80 which is £42.

There may be something that takes you over the Hope Valley but I think that would be over £50.

I forgot to mention I have a 16-25 railcard. That trip via Burton sounds interesting, and I've done the Hope Valley before so not paying over the odds for that. However, with me returning on a Sunday, I'm wary of less than frequent services.

The price will probably be a bit high but you could go Crewe-Stockport-Sheffield-Leicester.

East Midland Day Ranger, £23.35 with railcard. All options from Crewe involve going by Derby, but you could continue the long way round, via Nottingham, Grantham & Peterborough. or via Derby, Tamworth, & Nuneaton.

Aye, I thought of that, but since I'm returning on the Sunday, I'd have to pay double on both days. However, I have since found a handy split ticket for just the return journey, so I may do just that! (ranger on the way there, split ticket on the way back)
