This fare can't be right ?

I typed in a request in NRE for a return ticket from Normanton to Church Fenton and the options given were either:

An "anytime short distance return" for £47.10, or two singles for £22.

For those unfamiliar with the geography, the two are about half an hours distance with direct trains, however none of the direct trains stop at both stations unfortunately, so a detour via Leeds or York. Nevertheless, £40+ for such a journey is daylight extortion.

To paraphrase the great John McEnroe, they cannot be serious with this fare ?

To price half an hours day return within Yorkshire must be either stupidity or perfidy.

I do have a metrocard, however I was looking at options via York which doesn't really work with zone 3.

Actually, cancel that. I've just entered the same information and its just come up with a fare of £24 !

Is travel there and back on the same day? An Anytime Day Return, "route via Leeds", should be £24.00. An Off Peak Day Return, "route via Leeds", from Normanton to Church Fenton, is £21.10.

Castleford to Church Fenton is much more reasonably priced (£17.20); there is a huge Normanton tax in operation!

You can use your MetroCard to Castleford.

I think the pricing managers at Northern and TPE are well aware of your enjoyments of fish curries, and are keen to price this flow accordingly. This pricing ensures good value for taxpayers!

As another workaround, you could potentially save more money with a Castleford to York ticket, priced at £12.80 on the direct route:

The latter would only be valid to go via York in one direction, which would be tricky given the current service, but the worst that could happen if you went via Micklefield in the other direction is a change of route excess (£4.15).

A pragmatic guard wouldn't charge the excess, given there is only a short gap before your MetroCard becomes valid.

If you must go via York both directions, then the Church Fenton ticket is better.

I think I'll be going via Leeds for ease this time.

Bus to Pontefract and train from Baghill if the times suit. £7.90 return from Baghill to CF. Actually it's the infamous N Yorks border tax.
