Thirsk Station - any good?

Hello all...


After changing my mind about going to retford, we have now decided to go to Thirsk and then onto York.
My only problem is - is there a big fence which would stop me filming 125 mph trains going through?
I would like to get good filming of some fast action and freight in one station. I've checked Freightmaster but it's just a ripoff...
Anyone been or can tell me how much freight would go through on a Saturday?

Yes, it's rubbish at Thirsk.

Northallerton is considered OK but all photos/videos from there are boring as it's just a bog standard concrete platform with no scenery that's been done to death over a thousand times before.

Why not join us on 16th May to places like Colton near York? Much better than being limited to stations where you get accused of terrorism and 'normals' get in the way of phots/videos and you get in the way of normals going about their business.

Thirsk isn't that bad, the fence isn't that obscuring but you do have the disadvantage of the bridge which means you only get a few seconds footage of something travelling at 125mph.

Not being biased because it is where I am from but I would go for Ferryhill, 12 minute bus ride from Durham, 120mph foot crossing with the advantage that the crossing isn't far from Tursdale meaning that anything looped onto the slow will be either slowing right down or just accelarating away.

We are cycling. If you join the meet on 16th we'll show you the way.

But if you want to go alone the most straightforward route is:

Head down Tadcaster Road (combination of on-road and off-road cycle lanes), past Tesco, over the ECML (no photting opportunity here), under the ring road, and just keep going on that road and after a while you are out of Copmanthorpe and in a quiet country lane, just continue on this road round all the bends and after Colton village, turn left and you'll reach the road over the Junction.

It may be worth breaking your journey at Copmanthorpe.
