Third platform at Salford Crescent: project updates

I fear when the new platform comes into use, the ease of interchange between lines at Salford Crescent will be lost and it will be like Bolton in having a large hike between the platforms.

Anyhow photo from this evening when I was waiting for a delayed service.

Since this is the edge of the platform (as of 29/03/2025) that was installed over the recent closures, is it safe to assume we probably won't see many more closures since most of the stuff can be done away from the trackside?
On March 1st I passed over on a bus and saw a loco at the far end, so the segments were probably delivered by train.

There's another partial closure planned for Sunday the 13th April, the line towards Piccadilly is blocked and on Sunday the 27th the line to Victoria is closed but trains are running through to Piccadilly again

The platform construction is coming on very well, and it seems the majority (if not all) of the riser walls are now installed. Unsurprisingly, the dozer overturning incident isn't mentioned as a project highlight!

Our teams have been carrying out a series of 49-hour possessions to safely deliver a new, 157-metre-long platform at Salford Crescent on behalf of Network Rail.

The possessions support the initial ground works as part of the new £21m project - which will see the creation of the station’s third platform, to improve passenger flow and provide signallers with greater flexibility for trains to move around the network.

This has allowed our teams to start excavating, and concrete pour for the foundations of a new platform riser wall. Our teams have also managed the diversion of 25Kv ATF cables, and dismantled rear walls that clashed with the new platform – before installing the pre-cast riser wall units for the platform face, along with a rear wall of platform pre-cast units.

The team has now successfully created a site that is separate from the railway, to allow our people to work safely Monday-Friday during the day time while trains are operating. The next activities will include piling the foundations for the platform canopy, installing lift shaft piles and pit, and piling for the new footbridge steps

I passed through Salford Crescent station on Friday, and the new platform work is progressing well.
I was wondering if this could be the first "Level Boarding" platform in the north west? We live in hope.

All of merseyrail is level boarding so no they've beat Salford!!
I'm not sure it would be easy to implement though where different types of stock use the platform.

Not necessarily as it is a fixed red signal that has a shunt move available to go behind MP510 so unless there is a plan to use it for reversing trains calling there I can't see there being a need for it to be moved.

Looking at the set of photos I posted on July 8th and this set today, there is noticeable progress imo which is very encouraging.

That’s an inevitability when you decide to standardise boarding height on a system where it hasn’t been standard. For a while you’re spending money for very little gain. A bit like making the first station on the Glasgow subway step free - marvellous publicity but little practical until a second joins it. (Glasgow Subway taken as a theoretical example of a system where no station can be naturally step free as they’re all underground)

In the early 2010s, the station was reworked freeing up a bunch of space on the platform (though making connections to the University less convenient). Access used to be from a ramp leading to footbridge in the university campus and the ticket office was on the platform. There is still a footbridge in the university campus but it no longer serves the station. Instead access is via a new ticket office at main road level outside the tracks. This is connected to the station via a new footbridge.

As part of the current station upgrading works, was any consideration given to putting the missing roof on the footbridge that runs from the booking office to the two platforms currently in use? I have made the walk across it in heavy rain many times over the years.

It looks like the roof of the platform has started to be assembled.
Didn't manage to get any good photos thanks to the rain.

Opening windows on a bridge with no roof always amused me! You'd dearly like to hope they would finish the bridge during this round of upgrades

It has moved. Now a right handed signal at the end of the new platform

I know pointing is only cosmetic, but nonetheless, it is usually a finishing touch so really great to see major progress at the station on platform 3.

Took a trip to Salford Crescent today to view progress on Platform 3 construction. I will post photographs tomorrow morning. Plenty of orange army activity but looks mainly cosmetic to finish off to me.

I've still not used the bypass track, once it opens as Platform 0 (or 3), I'll probably try to both arrive and leave from it.

As promised a few photographs of the 3rd platform at Salford Crescent taken on January 22nd - taken from Platform 2. Shows the main construction work almost complete. Mainly cosmetic work left from what I could see.
