Things to do in Glasgow

I'm going to Glasgow for the day next month and had planned to spend the day with a local friend but she can't make it now (as she has just gotten herself a new job starting that week!)

So does anyone have any suggestions for thing for a lone traveller to do in the city for a day. Can be rail or non rail related

I have to be back at the Airport for about 20:30 so can't do the WHR or anything like that

You could have a run around the Glasgow Subway? It won't take the whole day but would use up some time.

Riverside museum is good and free get of at secc I think it's basically the new transport museum had a few kettles and the class 380 mock up and loads of old cars and bikes and the ship model room is a great place to pass some time

Depends what interests you, but when we had a day in Glasgow earlier this year we very much enjoyed the 'Tenement House'....very Glasgow!

I had 4 hours to kill in Glasgow a few months ago including travel to and from the airport but I did manage to see a bit.

I spent most of my time at the Buchanan Galleries then decided to go for a meal at the Lux restaurant which was very nice albeit a tad overpriced. If your flight is at 20:30 then I wouldn't board the Glasgow Flyer until at least 19:30 as there really isn't much at Glasgow Airport compared to the bars and restaurants in the city centre.

Trainspotter alternative: Get that red pen out and start scratching them SPT branches off, naturally.

Taking your posting on here i be looking to have a look at the two mainline stations starting with Central Station.
I'd take a train to Partick from Central low level.
Go down the the stairs from Partick station into the Subway station and take a take a train to Queen Street Station.
Easily done in about 90 minutes or less.
Go through the Buchanan St shopping complex and out the bus station side at Killermont St.
Two famous old stations and a underground/subway.

Kelvingrove art gallery (if you time it right you might get a free organ recital thrown in at lunchtime, too). Sauchiehall Street, and thereabouts, worth a wander as well

The promised land is only a 45-minute walk west-south-west of Glasgow Central (also known as Ibrox, home of Rangers FC)

Seriously though, there's a lot to do, I can't add much to what's already been said, but you'll not be bored. If you feel more in a transport than tourist mood when you arrive, there's the new transport museum, or, failing that, the busiest / densest local rail network outside of London. The £6 Roundabout ticket is valid for this fairly vast area plus the Subway (in a day you'll get maybe a quarter or slightly more of that done if taking it easy), or the £3.80 Discovery ticket gives you unlimited all-day travel on the Clockwork Orange, which I always find a real novelty, even if it is entirely underground! I'll be honest here and say I think Glasgow is a wonderful city, there's so much going on and it's exceptionally underrated. I've been to many towns and cities in the UK and Glasgow, for things to do, easily falls in the top 10.

The Transport Museum isn't at the Kelvin Hall anymore, it moved to the new Riverside Museum at Glasgow Harbour.

And the only thing worth really seeing is the zoo.

I've lived 30 miles from Edinburgh all my life and never ever been to the Castle.

More the fool you.....the Zoo is good for what it is, however to discount the Historical and Cultural attractions of Edinburgh is somewhat baffling.

What utter nonsense.....there are numerous varieties of Scottish Accents in the various geographic locations.

Are you trying to suggest Lanarkshire is somehow superior to the others, or more authentic. That wouldn't go down to well in other parts of Scotland.

Nope I am trying to suggest that the accents one hears in Edinburgh are not very Scottish. The Lanarkshire accent is an example of the other extreme.

Lanarkshire accent is very similar to the Glaswegian accent , only subtle differences . An Ayrshire accent is different sounds softer and of course it varys from place to place .
