A train driver is hit with stones as he investigates objects left on the railway line near Weston-super-Mare.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/somerset/8529705.stm

And precisely what will a judge give them when caught?
A nice comfy cell with all the mod cons? Probably Not!
More likely a slapped wrist a small fine and told to be a good boy/girl.

Are kids today really that bored and that STUPID?! I never would of thought of doing anything like that when I was a kid. I was brought up with some common sense thankfully but I think with the 'you cant touch me attitude' of youth today, parents and adults in general are scared of reprimanding them, through fear of getting sued or worse....and just so you know I am only 30 so I am not harping back to the good old days, this attitude has happened in the last 10 years I think. It needs to stop!

I think it's important to note that the majority of kids aren't that stupid, many are as decent as young people have been for 30 or 40 years. Also, kids throwing stones at train drivers really isn't a new phenomenon either, even in the 'glory days' of steam, some kids threw stones at the engines and crew's. Route crime is nothing new too, kids have been placing stuff on the railway for decades, anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't the route crime figures actually been falling for a few years now?

I agree with the above comments, this has been going on for decades, not ony to train drivers but the police, fire brigade, bus drivers, ambulance services. Unfortunately adolescents are usually always trying to prove to others how mature they are and by doing things like this seems to improve their status amoungst others, to adults they are being ruthless and childish. Educating them into the dangers they are causing would be a lot more helpful than banging them up.

Oh if its been going on for years it must be alright then , when these low life, spineless scum cause a serious accident or injury, which they will given enough time, will you still say the same thing.
When I were a lad (and I aint 30 no more  but hey age is merely experience ) we used to put a 2p piece on the track not concrete blocks.
Of course if they get caught they will NOT be arrested (affects the crime figures) and will be told how naughty they are being and let go to do it again, I mean the arrest figures are going down, doesn't mean that crime is.

But what about teenagers who don't, we're not all the same y'know

And what about teenagers who share the same interests (in trains) as you do?

I don't mean to be offensive, and I do agree that these 'delinquents' () need a more serious deterrent, but not all teenagers are like this!!

Quite right, royaloak! Educating idiots on the error of their ways doesn't work! They don't have the intelligence to be educated!

I would agree with They wouldn't give a toss. All that railway dangers infomation will do is tell them not to go on the railway, The kids will say "Yes, we wont go on the railways" and yet some of them will still go ahead and pay no attention to what they have been told and go on the railways causing trouble.

As for the original post, that train driver was checking what dangerous objects were on the line, and he was ambushed with stones from some little s*its trespassing. To be honest they should stand the offending kids against the wall and throw equally the same things at them and lets see how they like it, and I bet if they had done to them what they have done to the driver they will not even dream of doing it again. Little B*stards.

About 1962 I was on a train from Reading to Redhill, near Farnborough. It was hauled by a U and I was in a particularly old SECR coach, a few of which survived until the route was dieselised with the dreaded "tadpole" units. The window I was sat next to was suddenly hit by a stone and cracked badly, but fortunately for me and others it didn't shatter. So, for better or worse, this kind of idiotic behaviour is not new.

My post was aimed fairly and squarely at low life, oxygen wasting, brain cell deprived scum NOT the 95% of decent kids out there!

1/2p was better. Made them into pennies.
It has been going on for years and years - I remember a Rose Grove fireman being killed by a stone or brick thrown into his cab.
Deporting to Australia for stealing a loaf didn't seem to work very well.
Prison just makes them fitter and stronger, and gives an education in crime.
What do you suggest?
Of course the very great majority of teenagers behave exactly as they always have but those getting on without causing trouble get no publicity.

Well all I can say is they need a good hit from there parents earlier in life when they misbehaved then they'll have respect and could be kept under control later on in life.

Clip round the ear never did me any harm, but that would be "child abuse" now wouldn't it, so what do the do-gooders call it when these "children" attack people trying to do their jobs?
These b#stards need a taste of their own medicine THEN they will understand, all this softly softly bulls4it has got us in this mess now we need a good strong arm to get us out of it!

Sad state off affairs really. I know that the Severn Valley Railway has problems around Bewdly tunnel, but the police don't seem to do much and the railway can't.

Well if they are caught should be stuck in some 'Stocks' for a few Hours.

Yes, I don't think anybody can label every single young person in the 'being a complete div' bracket, all I was trying to say is I am finding kids are getting away with far more these days because they have nothing to fear. Two of my friends have given up teaching because they are fed up with the abuse they get from the kids, both verbally and even physically! But they have no powers to stop them or even touch them (even if they are being hit continiously). Its out of control....When I was in school if a teacher shouted everyone sat up and listened and had the respect to stop whatever naughtyness they were doing. I'm not talking bring back the cane, but lets at least be a little more stern with them.

.....or send all of the idiot ones to military school  atleast the rest of the youth that are good law abiding and respectful citizens won't have to worry about getting a bad name, then.

I'm not sure what inspired this comment. The point I was making is that route crime isn't a 'kid these days...' issue, as Polls seemed to be suggesting, Oliver and Jeff Worsnop have since given examples to back this argument up.

Though it's nothing new, neither me or TDK suggested that this made it acceptable. :|

I mean the arrest figures are going down, doesn't mean that crime is.

I believe that the reported route crime figures have been falling for a few years now, again, if anyone knows otherwise, I'd be glad to hear it. So, unless train drivers and Network Rail staff are trying to skew the figures on behalf of the BTP and/or the Government, there is no reason to believe the reported route crime figures would be wrong.

I don't mean to be offensive, and I do agree that these 'delinquents' () need a more serious deterrent, but not all teenagers are like this!!

This was the main point I was trying to make, though I would say the majority of teenagers aren't 'delinquents'.

Btw, I'm 20 and fully agree that there are many teenagers that are extremely dodgy, many of which are a real danger to society, these deserve more punishment then our supposed 'police state' can or would ever do. Luckily though, the bad 'youths' are still in the minority in the grand scheme of things.

I'm all for it, but the problem is that the parents of the children are either scared of them, or they are the sort of parents who are like "my child would never do that, they are absolutely perfect in every way" meanwhile they are on drugs, smoking, drinking, and having sex when they are 10, and everyone, even the police are in the wrong because the child is "perfect" its the parents fault as much as it is the childs, if the paent really cared for the child they would teach them some discipline and I am 16, I am the age that most of these ****s are and I am a good person, many people have said that I am too mature for my age, and I should be out there smoking crack and pumping god knows what into my system, not helping people with their luggage or just generally being a nice person. lastly, why should we save the planet now? in the future it will be full of chavs so save your children from the hell of being a chav.

apologies for the swearing but I am very passionate about this

I agree I am 15 myself! These chavs also give us 'Younger Generation' a bad image and nearly everyone assumes we are all the same when there are some decent young people out there. :)

No powers to stop them? Rubbish! School staff ARE permitted to physically restrain students under certain circumstances. If teachers are under the impression they can't, I suggest they go away and read their bumph again.

But I do agree, a lot of the problem appears to be people letting miscreants get away with it. Who should be blamed? IMO, anyone who says "oh, I won't challenge them, there's no point".

So you challenge them by restraining them and end up on an assault charge and they walk off scot free, seen it happen!

Sniper, my comment was because you said it has been going on for years, probably as long as there have been railways, but at no point did you condemn it.

Saw the topic title and thought it was yet another pacer tread

The problem isn't exclusive to mainline railways, we get our fair share of smartarse kids on the track at the ALR. And it wouldn't be the first or even second time I've seen a train get mooned at on the K&WVR

Its just bored kids mistakingly thinking they're tough. I'd like to see how tough they are when up against >40 tons of train. Its just a shame the terrible effect it has on the drivers who are unlucky enough to hit one. We need some emotionless drivers to get rid of all the little $*!tbags (preferably armed with some kind of automatic weapon, in case they miss :D)

But back in the real world, I don't think theres a lot that can be done about them. If they have it in their heads that it'd be 'fun' to try and derail a train, then education is a lost cause on them.

".

One of the aforementioned teacher friends held a 14 year old boy by the wrists because he was hitting her with a ruler.....she had to go through a big tribunal and was suspended. The boy just got detention. Other teachers see this thing happen all the time which makes them wary. It doesn't matter what the 'bumph' says, when put into action the teacher very rarely gets the protection they need.

I didn't realise my first message implicated all youth. If they were all like the ones I was describing we'd be living in hell. <D

We had a s4ithead who terrorised our neighbourhood for about 3 years, until he turned 16, suddenly his whole attitude changed because he was then classed as an adult, all the time he was giving us s4it I kept telling him that when he was 16 I would make good on my promise.
2 months after his birthday I got him, you should have seen him cry and that was before I hit him, still made good on the promise though, boy it felt good!
