For the past couple of days, I have tried to book tickets using thetrainline website. I have an account, but when I log in I am being asked to update my details, including a password. As I have not requested a new password I am a little suspicious. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.

I don’t use Trainline so cannot comment on this but there’s no point in using Trainline as they charge. Booking fee which train company websites are not allowed to charge. Despite their fancy advertising Trainline are never cheaper, they don’t have access to a cheaper pool of tickets.

I recommend the forum’s own ticket website. It doesn’t charge a booking fee but will check to see if a combination of tickets is cheaper for your journey. If it is then it does charge a share of saving fee but it is still cheaper overall then buying the through journey.

To my surprise it was recently demonstrated to me that Trainline do actually check for ticket splits too. I still wouldn't use them, mainly because I object to a booking fee, but it's interesting to know the facility exists.

They've been doing this for a while. They don't charge a "share of the savings" either. There are various scenarios where they don't charge a booking fee either.
Strangely they often come up with different splits to trainsplit, so it's worth checking both sites as sometimes one is cheaper than the other & it's not always the same way round! But don't forget to factor in any charges on both sites.

A lot of websites will ask you to update your password periodically as a security measure, it is probably just that.

Of course, if you do find a cheaper split option on Trainline then I’m sure the train split people would love to know about it so they can ensure they can continue to offer the best possible pricing.

We've had people get into trouble because of Trainline split tickets where one of the part journeys has been fulfilled with an Advance ticket, and the purchaser had not realised that they were bound by the train times given.

The Forum's site (based on Trainsplit) offers a range of prices and timings and the purchaser can select "Fixed" or "Flexible" on a tab at the top of the table displaying the costs.

At least it's not as bad as Chiltern and Grand Central, whose booking sites sell split tickets without indicating they're doing so, and double down by only showing the ticket name for the least restrictive ticket involved. So you only find out about it at the fulfilment stage, when you get two separate tickets! It does generate separate barcodes for each actual ticket, but incorporates the full itinerary on each, rather than just the part that applies to that particular leg.

For example: https://buy.chilternrailways.co.uk/...dren=0&railcards=[]&ls=LS_1_2&p=PRICE_P_1_117

The above is a search for a journey from York to Cross Gates, departing on 7th November after 10:30. The Anytime Day Single for the through journey is £18.60, but one of the options it's showing me at the time of writing is described as an Anytime Day Single but priced at £8.90. The only hint that something's not quite right is when you click through to buy it and it gives a "You must reserve a seat with this ticket" message.

For bonus points, it also uses IATA codes for stations in the search URL, where they exist, and throws an error if you try to change it to the CRS code!

Trainline do offer a variety of prices and times too! You can choose from a range of criteria. It always explains if you've got an advance and that you must use booked train. But people will always try it on.
